Because heterosexuality has historically been the default cultural norm, everyday expressions of straight relationships, such as holding hands in public, talking about a spouse at work, or media storylines are often viewed as standard or neutral behavior.

Conversely, because LGBTQ+ relationships have traditionally been less visible, similar public expressions can sometimes be perceived as more noticeable, deliberate, or "flaunted," even when the actions themselves are identical.

Happy LGBTQIA+ History Month! 🌈 🏳️‍⚧️

In the spring of 2026, when Brookline Pride approached James Lamusco, President of Brookline Together, about a potential partnership, he asked this question:

“Do you think this is something we need? Do people want this?”

Our answer was simple:

Yes, and yes...until every person feels safe, seen and like they are part of the community they call home.

So, this October, let's take some time to learn. To remember. And to recognize that being LGBTQIA+ isn't new, a phase, or a choice.

We have always been here. We have always been part of our neighborhoods, our families, our workplaces, and our history.

Our hope this month is that through learning and understanding, we can build a community where everyone knows:

To hold space for someone means to listen, be present, and let them feel what they’re feeling without trying to fix it or judge them.

Sometimes the best response isn’t advice, it’s simply saying, "That sounds really hard. I’m here for you. Do you want to talk about it?”

Listen to understand instead of listening to respond.
