WHY WE CAST | Meet Aislynn

When Aislynn first came to Girls on the Fly in 2021, she was being introduced to a sport she says she might never have known or loved without the program.

She kept coming back.

Year after year, program after program, fly fishing became much more than learning how to cast or catch a fish. It opened doors to new interests in nature, art, biology and entomology. It introduced her to people of different ages and experience levels who could teach her something new. It gave her friendships, experiences and a community she genuinely enjoys being part of.

This year, finances could have kept Aislynn from returning. Instead, one of our volunteers personally funded a scholarship so she could join us again for a second program this summer.

That is community.

When we asked Aislynn what Girls on the Fly means to her, she told us:

“If I didn’t pick up fly fishing, I probably wouldn’t like half the things I like now.”

She also shared something we hope every girl who comes through our program discovers: you can start something new today and, a few years down the road, find yourself with new interests, new friends and experiences you may never have had otherwise.

We cast because sometimes introducing a girl to fly fishing does not just teach her a new sport.

It expands her world.

That is why we cast.

WHY WE CAST: MEET “BECCA” 🎣

When Becca arrived at Girls on the Fly this summer, she was scared.

After a difficult year, her family received a full scholarship so she could attend. When she arrived that morning, she clung to her mom, visibly shaking and unsure if she could stay.

We told her something we want every girl to know:

“You already did the hardest part. You are here. You showed up for yourself. Check and done.”

And then, one small step at a time, Becca began to try.

She created art shoulder-to-shoulder with a new fishing buddy. She learned about trout and aquatic insects. She picked up a fly rod. She learned how her mentors would keep her safe.

And then she caught her first fish.

The change was remarkable.

The girl who had arrived afraid stood at the water absolutely beaming. Her mentors watched her confidence grow with every new thing she tried.

When her mom returned that afternoon, she was stunned.

Her daughter walked toward her with her head held high, a huge smile on her face, and a bounce in her step.

That is why we Cast for Her.

A scholarship did more than put a fly rod in Becca's hand. It gave her an opportunity to discover something about herself.

I can try hard things. I can be brave. I can do this.

On September 19, our board and volunteers are fishing in the inaugural **Cast for Her** fundraiser with a goal of raising **$10,000 to support Girls on the Fly programming in 2027.**

Your donation helps make the next Becca story possible.

🎣 Every cast builds her future.

A big Girls on the Fly shout out to the Conifer Lobos Football team, Coach, and the PTA for organizing such a fun, interactive, challenging, and meaningful football clinic last month at Conifer High School for middle school boys and girls!

What stood out most was not just the drills or the skills, but the people. Watching the high school athletes encourage and mentor the middle school participants was a powerful reminder that leadership is learned through example. We were equally impressed by the attention and care the coaching staff gave to both their players and every young athlete who attended.

The discipline, inclusiveness, teamwork, encouragement, and countless smiles made a lasting impression.

At Girls on the Fly, we believe in recognizing people who are investing in the next generation. Whether it is on a river, on a trail, or on a football field, young people need mentors who inspire confidence, model character, and ignite passion.

Thank you, Conifer Lobos Football, Coach, and the PTA, for creating an experience where youth inspired youth. We are grateful for your commitment to building strong, confident, and connected young people.

👏 Kudos, Lobos. Keep leading the way.

A heartfelt thank you to our Trout Sponsor, Jennifer Gann State Farm Insurance, for believing in the girls we serve.

This summer, Girls on the Fly experienced a 200% increase in scholarship applications. It is a powerful reminder that more families than ever are seeking opportunities for their daughters to build confidence, resilience, and connection in the outdoors.

Because of generous community partners like Jennifer Gann State Farm Insurance, we were able to provide full scholarships to every girl who applied this season. That means every young girl who wanted to experience the transformative power of a day on the water had the opportunity to do so, regardless of financial circumstances.

Jennifer, thank you for investing in the next generation of strong, confident young women. Your support is creating memories, building resilience, and changing lives, one Fly Girl at a time.

💙 Thank you for helping us ensure that every girl has the chance to cast, connect, and discover just how capable she is.

🎉 We are excited to welcome Maia Trumbull to the Girls on the Fly Board of Directors! 🎉

Maia is a Colorado native, registered nurse, educator, and lifelong outdoor enthusiast whose love of fishing began as a young girl on the Gulf of Mexico with her mom. She caught the fly fishing bug early, purchasing her first fly rod at just nine years old and learning to tie flies in middle school through an after-school science program.

Today, Maia combines more than 20 years of nursing experience with a lifelong passion for fishing, camping, hiking, and exploring new waters around the world. Whether she is fishing in Colorado or planning her next adventure, she understands how the outdoors can build confidence, resilience, and lasting memories.

We are honored to have Maia's experience, compassion, and adventurous spirit helping guide Girls on the Fly as we continue inspiring young women to discover their strength on and off the water. Please join us in welcoming Maia to the team! 💙🎣

There is nothing more rewarding than hearing from the families we serve.

While our mission is to empower girls through fly fishing, nature, and connection, the impact often reaches far beyond the water. Parents see new confidence, volunteers leave inspired, and our entire community grows stronger together.

One message from a parent after our recent program day perfectly captured why we do this work:

*"She absolutely loved it! What an amazing program you are running. I was brought to tears with how empowering it was. You could just feel the unbelievable energy. Eliza will 100% be returning next year. Thank you for giving my daughter such an awesome experience!"*

To every parent who trusts us with their daughter, and every volunteer who gives their heart to these girls, thank you. You are helping create confidence, resilience, friendships, and memories that last long after the day is over.

This is why Girls on the Fly exists. 💙
