Girls On The Fly is a non-profit with an educational based curriculum dedicated to promoting self confidence and helping young girls to develop a positive body image and teach ways to cope with depression, su***de, and negative self talk through fly fishing and outdoor adventuring.

Before selfies, followers, and fishing for the camera, Joan Wulff was casting her own path.

This month, the First Lady of Fly Fishing celebrated her 100th birthday. A champion, teacher, and trailblazer, she helped open a sport to generations of women and girls.

Her legacy invites us to think about why we step onto the water.

The joy of learning. The quiet that settles inside us. The challenge that keeps us trying. That spark when we discover something we love.

At Girls on the Fly, we want girls to experience those things for themselves. To feel proud of their growing skills, comfortable being beginners, and connected to something beyond a screen.

You do not need an audience for something to matter. You can love a sport simply because it ignites something good in you.

Happy 100th birthday, Joan. We carry your legacy forward every time a girl picks up a fly rod and discovers her own reason to keep casting. 💙

A mailbox full of thank you cards and a heart even fuller. 💌

Today, I mailed more than a dozen handwritten notes to the people who supported me personally during Cast for Her. Writing each one reminded me how much kindness and generosity surround Girls on the Fly.

That gratitude extends to everyone who made our annual fundraiser possible. To our donors, thank you for believing in our girls. To the teams who fished, gathered pledges, and rallied their communities, thank you for putting your hearts into this event. To our volunteers and board members, thank you for the time, energy, and care you give to bring it all together.

Your support helps more girls experience the confidence of trying something new, the connection of a supportive community, and the joy of time on the water.

From me personally, and from all of us at Girls on the Fly, thank you. We are deeply grateful. 🎣

WHY WE CAST

Scarlette came to Girls on the Fly with one arm, some understandable nerves, and the courage to try something completely new. By lunchtime, she had made new friends. By the end of the day, she had hooked and netted a fish of her own.

Before Scarlette arrived, our volunteers researched and secured loaner equipment designed specifically for anglers with one arm. We had never used anything like it before, so two volunteers arrived hours early to assemble it, test it, make adjustments, and start over each time something did not work.

They failed more than once, but they refused to give up. They wanted Scarlette to arrive knowing that a team of people had already worked hard to make sure she could fully participate, fish independently, and have an experience she would never forget.

And Scarlette matched their determination with her own.

When she finally hooked a fish and brought it to the net, cheers erupted from around the ponds. It was loud, joyful, and unforgettable. That moment belonged to Scarlette, but it was also a beautiful reminder of what dedicated volunteers make possible.

Our volunteers do far more than give their time. They research, adapt, arrive early, stay late, solve problems, encourage every girl, and keep trying until each participant has the opportunity to succeed.

We cast for brave girls like Scarlette who leave our property stronger and more confident.

We cast for the incredible volunteers who strap up, show up, and put their whole hearts into creating these experiences.

This is why we cast. 💙🎣

Our 2026 season was made possible by the incredible sponsors and community partners who believed in our girls and invested in their growth.

Together, you helped us serve 51 girls, provide 22 scholarships, and support 1,568 volunteer hours. By the end of the season, 86% of participants reported strong confidence in their fly fishing skills, and 95% reported strong mind-body awareness.

Your generosity created confidence, connection, resilience, and memories that will last far beyond the water.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the families who carry that loss every day.

We also remember the extraordinary courage and compassion of the good humans who ran toward danger, helped strangers, supported their neighbors, and reminded us what it means to care for one another.

Twenty-five years later, may we continue to choose kindness, service, courage, and community. May we raise the next generation to look for ways to help and to always be a light for others.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸
