Neighborhood Ministries, Phoenix

10/07/2026

Victor first came to Neighborhood Ministries through a school internship.

When the internship ended, he chose to stay.

He supported the immigration legal clinic, served at Kids Club, helped at camp, and kept showing up. Along the way, he practiced responsibility, leadership, service, and the kind of commitment that helps young people prepare for what comes next.

Now Victor is heading to Santa Clara University on scholarship, carrying with him a deeper sense of purpose and community.

Each Wednesday night, around 65 young people around Victor’s age gather at Sueños for belonging, encouragement, life skills, leadership development, and trusted relationships.

That is what Sueños helps make possible: trusted support, leadership, and pathways toward a hopeful future.

A few weeks ago, we lost a precious mom in our community to a rare blood disorder.

In the hospital, her children were asking when Monday nights would start again.

For these children, Kids Life is more than a program. It is a familiar place where they are known, welcomed, seen, wanted, and loved.

When childhood is altered by loss, children need a shelter in the storm. That is what we long for Monday nights to be.

Each Monday night, about 120 children gather at Kids Life for dinner, worship, Bible lessons, caring leaders, and a place to belong.

Your support helps keep that place ready.

What happens when the church finds itself in a season of loss, disruption, and deep examination? Drawing from St. Catherine of Siena and contemporary theologian Dr. Elaine Heath, this reflection explores the “Dark Night of the Soul” not simply as an ending, but as a difficult path toward renewal, deeper faithfulness, and a church centered again in the love of God.

The post continues the Broken Heart portion of the series. It moves from St. Catherine of Siena as “the ancestor” to Dr. Elaine Heath as “the friend,” using Heath’s threefold contemplative path of Purgation, Illumination, and Union to explore how difficult seasons can become places of spiritual transformation and renewal.

Monday and Wednesday nights are back!

Kids Life and Sueños are gathering again, creating steady spaces for children and young people to be known, welcomed, encouraged, and supported.

On Mondays, children gather for dinner, worship Bible stories, caring leaders, and a place to belong.

On Wednesdays, youth gather at Sueños for trusted relationships, life skills, leadership, and encouragement for what comes next.

We are grateful for another season of showing up with children, youth, and families in South Phoenix.

Your support helps keep these spaces ready! https://staff.nmphx.com/Donate/?Main=FALSE&campaign=&CampaignID=701QU00001wPhPg&SpecialName=September&SelectCampaignFund=Special%20Campaign&Code=

"When mysticism was veiled in mystery and wrapped in private ecstasies and personal devotions, Catherine's mysticism plagued her with the worries of the world and plunged her into the very center of life… When everything in the world around her was in chaos, in both church and state, Catherine refused to buy into it or look away."

What can the lives of faithful Christians who came before us teach us about remaining hopeful, present, and faithful in difficult times? Communion of the Saints begins with the “great cloud of witnesses” and an invitation to learn from those who widened the road before us.

Explore the introduction to Neighborhood Ministries’ Communion of the Saints series and discover how the lives and faith of those who came before us can strengthen the Church’s calling today.
