Today, we honor Indigenous peoples, their cultures, and the communities whose care for one another continues across generations.

At St. Mary’s Food Bank, we are grateful to work alongside the Ak-Chin Indian Community, Hopi Tribe, Hualapai Tribe, Kaibab Paiute Tribe, Navajo Nation, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Tohono O’odham Nation, and Yavapai-Apache Nation. Each partnership is grounded in listening, collaboration, and a shared commitment to helping neighbors access food.

Through our Chinle Neighborhood Food Center, community food distributions, and Tribal Food Boxes, we support families across the communities we serve. Our Tribal Food Boxes reach Navajo, Hopi, Hualapai, Yavapai-Apache, and Kaibab Paiute communities, helping connect families with nourishing, culturally relevant food.

Food is more than nourishment, it connects people to family, heritage, and community. We are committed to respecting those connections and supporting local Tribal vendors through purchasing and partnerships.

The Phoenix Neighborhood Food Center will be open tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, with free grocery items available for our community.

Vicki has spent her life taking care of others.

An Army veteran, she was preparing to leave the military after serving for three years when everything changed. “When 9-11 hit, I was on my way to exit,” she said. “But 9-11 hit and I stayed in and went to Afghanistan.” was in the Army for eight years.”

After returning home, Vicki built another career centered around service. For the last 20 years, she has been a bus driver, and for the past six years she has transported children with special needs.

“I have all varieties of special needs kids … wheelchair bound, autism, some with behavioral issues. I enjoy all of them,” she said. “It fills my heart.”

But this summer, Vicki is the one who needs help. Because with school out, she doesn’t have work. “I have two more weeks to work, but then I’ll be off for the rest of the summer,” she said.

At the same time, she is going through a divorce while caring for her homebound mother and raising two teenage daughters who are studying hard and dreaming of college.

“Going through the divorce, my income is dramatically down. I’m trying to make sure my kids and my mom have a roof over their heads … somewhere to sleep so we’re not on the streets,” she said.

Vicki said her toughest bills are rent and electricity. “It’s just a regular house, but it’s two stories, so the electricity is a lot,” she said. “And the rent is so high, but there’s nowhere else to go.”

Like so many families, Vicki is doing everything she can. But even working hard and budgeting carefully doesn’t always stretch far enough.

That’s why she turns to St. Mary’s Food Bank. Vicki has been coming to St. Mary’s off and on for about a year. “This helps a lot — it cuts my grocery bill about in half.”

Thanks to caring donors, families like Vicki’s can keep food on the table during life’s toughest seasons.

🎢 The final total is in!

Thanks to everyone who joined us for Saturday’s Castles n 'Coasters $10 Day, we collected an incredible 22,755 pounds of food — enough to help provide 18,963 meals for Arizona neighbors facing hunger. 💚

The generosity was so great that our St. Mary’s Food Bank tractor-trailer was filled to the top with canned food and peanut butter — and donations were still coming in! When there was no room left in the trailer, a kind Castles & Coasters guest, Andrew, offered his pickup truck bed to carry the remaining cans.

Thank you to Castles & Coasters, Andrew, and every guest who donated food, enjoyed a day at the park, and helped make a meaningful difference for our community. ❤️

Last Friday, Fry's Food Stores in Surprise and the Surprise Police Department came together to fill a police cruiser with food for the community! From 1 to 5 p.m., shoppers were invited to donate nonperishable items and bring them to the cruiser.

By the end, the community was filled with joy, not only from the car the Surprise Police Department brought to the event, but by the amount of food collected to support our neighbors in need. Together, shoppers donated 1,000 pounds of food to support neighbors in Surprise who need it. 🚔🥫💚

Helping neighbors access food takes more than one moment, one donation, or one organization. It takes a community working together. 💚

As we wrap up Hunger Action Month, we’re celebrating the collective impact of Walmart and Sam's Club Fight Hunger Spark Change Campaign. Thank you to the shoppers, associates, suppliers, volunteers, and community partners who helped support neighbors across Arizona.

The impact goes beyond the campaign itself. It takes food pickups, sorting and packing, deliveries, and local partnerships to help food reach neighbors throughout the year.

Thank you for being part of the work that makes it possible.
