Priscilla came to ACCT Philly on June 7th as a stray brought in by a community member who noticed she was unwell. At just 4.4 pounds, this six-year-old girl arrived thin and in need of veterinary attention. Priscilla has been diagnosed with severely unregulated hyperthyroidism, the root cause of her muscle wasting and low body weight. Her thyroid level was so elevated that it exceeded the upper limit of the test used to measure it. She also has a grade III heart murmur, mild anemia, and corneal scarring in her left eye. With proper hyperthyroid treatment and monitoring, cats like Priscilla can stabilize and thrive — she just needs someone equipped and committed to supporting her care. Despite everything she has been through, Priscilla is a genuinely sweet girl who is tolerant of being handled and petted all over. Due to her medical concerns, she is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter.

6/9 Vet Exam: Priscilla had a body condition score of 3/9 and significant muscle wasting. Her left eye has corneal scarring with no discharge. Mild dental tartar was noted. A grade III/VI heart murmur was detected. Bloodwork showed mild anemia, elevated white blood cells, low platelets (possibly due to clumping), low creatinine, elevated total protein, and elevated liver enzymes. Her thyroid level was greater than 20, indicating severely unregulated hyperthyroidism.
6/7 Intake Exam: Priscilla weighed 4.4 pounds with a body condition score of 2/9 (very thin). Her left eye appeared cloudy and discolored, her ears were waxy, her coat was flaky, and her teeth were stained with tartar.

Salem was surrendered to ACCT when his owner could not take him to their new home. According to his previous owner, Salem is a sweet, quiet, and affectionate cat who enjoys spending time with people. He has a medium energy level, listens well, and is described as very lovable with strangers. He has been around children and is either friendly with them or largely indifferent to their presence. Salem does not enjoy having his belly touched, but otherwise is an easygoing companion. He has previously lived with another cat, though his owner reported that he does not react well to dogs.
Unfortunately, the version of Salem that we are seeing in the shelter is a stark contrast to the notes provided from his owner. However, this is a good indication that being in the shelter is triggering a very fear-based, reactive response. It's not comforting, to view such polarizing behaviors in a cat so terrified and unsure, but it does remind us that this aspect of Salem is facing forward only in the most stressful of circumstances, and that his behavior in a home is likely to be much different.
With the right snacks, though, we can see little bits of a calmer, happier Salem through the cracks. Staff has made it a personal mission to befriend him--so a lot of snack varieties were involved. His favorite seems to be churu, and, in an infrequent moment of peace, we saw Salem gently licking a serving off of a staff member's finger. Between moments like this, Salem is hissing, growling, swatting, and making himself small, in his kennel. When met with gentle words, a slow approach, and a hefty portion of catnip, Salem has also been known to open up and roll around in it. We would love to see this guy leave the shelter with an adopter or rescue who can prioritize his space and comfort, and ensure that he has time to feel safe again.

Behavior Notes
6/11 Per staff Spent some time getting Salem to move through the kennels so he could have his kennel deep cleaned. He greeted me with dilated pupils and low growls, but I presented catnip and he quickly calmed down and jumped forward. I sat on the ground below him and talked softly and he stayed near the front of the kennel, crouched and tensed with occasional growls but mostly sniffing and eating his food. He returned some slow blinks and allowed me to put my hand near his food for sniffs.
Given how messy his kennel was and how quickly he jumped down to sniff the catnip, the staff and I made the decision to try and use it to lure him to the litter side of his kennel so we could get it cleaned. We cleaned the litter side and I made a trail to lead him through. He growled when I presented more catnip to get him down, but eventually he followed the trail. I sat with him while she was cleaning his kennel and he growled, but would return slow blinks. Near the end of cleaning he got irritated and attempted to smack the staff, but when I said 'no' he retracted and backed up.

05/25: Was on perch. Described as not handleable. "When I got close to his kennel he growled and hissed and lunged trying to scratch me."
06/01: Was on perch. Described as not handleable, shy and assertive about it, and not food motivated, not playful, low energy "Gave food on wand toy - hissed throughout but didn't swat. Left him privacy curtain. Also hissed throughout. (putting up privacy curtain)"
06/05: Was on perch and at front of kennel. Described as not handleable, shy, not food motivated, not playful, and low energy. "Enjoys catnip! Ate several sprinkles worth and eventually settled into a micro nap near the front before returning to the shelf."
06/11: Was on perch and at front of kennel. Described as almost handleable, shy, not food motivated, not playful, low energy, and having used the litterbox. "Was able to clean both sides of kennel using a cat nip trail!"

I went to see a cat in the adoptions room and while I was talking to him, Salem who was above him, came to the bottom level of his cage and was looking at me. I decided to talk to Salem for a little while even though he was low growling at me. I talked to him and placed some churu on the floor of his kennel. After a little while he started eating some of it and overtime his growling lessened. He licked some of the churu from the blanket and then the tube. He slow blinked at me and seemed to enjoy the attention I was giving him, sounds I was making and churu I was providing 🙂 I put some churu on my finger and he slowly approached a licked it off. Despite his hissing and growling, he made slow, soft eye contact and settled in. I gave him an igloo filled with catnip and he stuck his nose in it. He allows me very close to his kennel door without any vocalization. It seems like he wants attention and is just uncomfortable in this environment.

Enjoys catnip. Came down from his shelf to eat a sprinkling of it and stuck around for a couple more sprinkles. I sat on a chair in front of his cage, playing purring noises on my phone, and he was low growling throughout, especially upon eye contact — but he didn’t swat. He stayed off the shelf and eventually lay down, reduced his growling, and started drifting off to sleep.

I opened the kennel to say hi to Salem and he was lying down on the top shelf of him kennel with her eyes half open. As soon as I opened the kennel door, he began to growl and move back. He sniffed the fake hand that I stuck in his kennel, but the immediately recoiled and hissed. The more I put the fake hand near him, the more he would recoil, hiss and growl. I went to grab a toy to see if he’d be more amenable to that, but he began to snort so I scrapped the idea.

Snoopy is an approximately 8-year-old gentleman who came to ACCT Philly on June 8th as a health surrender after being left behind by his original owner. The person caring for him noticed he couldn't close his mouth and had stopped eating and drinking, so they brought him to the shelter to get the help he desperately needed. In his previous home, Snoopy lived with other animals and was described as a sweet, friendly boy who loved pets on his head and back.
At the shelter, staff discovered that a severely abscessed tooth had become displaced, causing Snoopy significant pain and preventing him from closing his mouth. He underwent several dental extractions, including removal of the infected tooth, and is also being treated for a painful ear infection. While the infected tooth that caused him so much discomfort has been removed, Snoopy still has additional dental needs and may require ongoing treatment for his ear infection.
Even after everything he's endured, Snoopy remains gentle and trusting. During kennel visits, he arches into pets, seeks out attention, and moves closer for more affection. Snoopy deserves the comfort, stability, and love of a home where he can finally leave his difficult past behind. Due to his medical concerns, Snoopy is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner.

BEHAVIOR NOTES:
Per staff 6/11: Snoopy had just returned from seeing the vet when I went to visit him. He arched his back into pets before walking to the other side of his kennel. When I moved to that side, he walked back to the first side and then jumped up onto his shelf. While on the shelf, he allowed and leaned into pets along his side and neck, only occasionally showing hesitation or lip licking. He shook his head after I scratched near his infected ear. He then moved closer to me on the shelf, continuing to enjoy and accept pets.
Per owner surrender notes 6/8: Loves strangers. Don't know how he is around children. Neutral with dogs and selective about other cats. Issues with urination, pees outside the box. Feel he is suffering.
Per owner 6/6: I am moving and my roommate’s brother abandoned his cat at the apartment. I have my own pets and cannot take him to my new apartment. He is sick and I cannot care for him. Since Friday he has not closed his mouth and will not eat or drink. Despite reaching out multiple times the brother will not come get him and said we can take him to a shelter. Unfortunately that is the only option we have as I will not leave him here to die. He is very friendly. He is sweet and loves pets on the head and back. He lives with adults, small dogs, and cats. He has had repeated ear infections and currently cannot close his mouth. He has not eaten or drank in 36 hours. Whatever happens he is a very sweet cat that unfortunately had a terrible owner.
MEDICAL NOTES:
6/11 Vet Exam: Recheck exam noted right ear infection and that the extraction site at tooth 204 remains open. Urgent promotion to rescue recommended for expedited exit from shelter due to dental needs.
6/8 Vet Exam: Sedated for oral assessment due to significant discomfort. Unable to close his mouth, left upper canine has severe tooth root abscess with ulceration through the gumline and significant buccal bone expansion and gingival hyperemia, canine tooth is displaced and causing malocclusion and inability to fully close the mouth. There is severe calculus accumulation over maxillary premolars and molars. Looks like 307 and 407 had previously resorbed, with no crown present in the mouth and some bone expansion in this area. Lower cheek teeth appear to be in overall good condition. Extracted teeth 204 and 206 by simple elevation intact. Extracted teeth 107 and 207 by elevation, these teeth were loose and elevated out, but mesial roots showed evidence of resorption and were only partially intact, distal roots appeared fully intact. Right ear is very inflamed with significant purulent discharge. Cleaned right ear and applied EKT. Given antibiotics and pain medication.
6/8 Intake Exam: Weight 9.6 lbs. Approximately 8 years old. Neutered male. Eyes clear. Ears dirty, red, and inflamed — cleaned. Nose clear. Coat and skin normal. Dental disease noted with red gums and discoloration.

Should Java's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Java came to ACCT Philly on May 19th after his owner was hospitalized and could no longer care for their cats. Upon arrival, Java had a significant flea infestation, a large infected rodent ulcer on his upper lip, and inflamed skin along his back. While his lip has improved greatly with treatment, his skin issues have not fully resolved despite ongoing care. A hypoallergenic food trial is now recommended to further investigate underlying allergies.
Despite everything he’s been through, Java has remained a total sweetheart. Staff consistently describe him as gentle, tolerant, and easygoing. He comes right up to the front of his kennel, leans into pets all over his head, neck, and sides, and remains relaxed and receptive even while eating and drinking. He’s now looking for a rescue partner or experienced adopter who can continue his medical care and give him the steady, comfortable home he deserves.

Per staff 6/11: Such a sweetheart! Came right to the front of his kennel and allowed pets all over his head, neck, and sides.
Per staff 5/19: I went to meet Java in his kennel. He allowed pets on his head and under his chin. He drank and ate readily with no issues. Very tolerant of pets, even while eating and drinking.
MEDICAL NOTES:
6/10 Vet Exam: Rodent ulcer continues to decrease in size, but suspected eosinophilic plaque on mid-dorsum has not improved since last recheck. Both were initially attributed to an underlying flea allergy, however, skin issues have not improved significantly despite treatment of fleas and weeks of steroid use. Hypoallergenic food trial is recommended as the next step, and this is not feasible in the shelter setting. Another Convenia injection was administered and prednisolone was continued. SSD prescribed to affected skin twice daily.
5/26 Vet Exam: Rodent ulcer on upper lip is no longer infected and has decreased in size by approximately 50%. Area of moist dermatitis on the back has improved by approximately 25%. Continue prednisolone for an additional week before considering a taper. Animax applied topically twice daily to affected skin on back.
5/19 Vet Exam: Waxy debris in ears. Teeth have diffuse staining and gingivitis. Large infected rodent ulcer on right upper lip. Over-barbered fur with excoriations and moist dermatitis on lower back. Live fleas and flea dirt present. Good body condition, great appetite. Heart, lungs, and abdomen all within normal limits. Prescribed Bravecto, Capstar, Drontal, Convenia, and prednisolone. Neutered the same day.
5/19 Triage Exam: Weight 9.5 lbs, lean body condition. Eyes clear, ears waxy, nose red and swollen, coat and skin with flea rash all over, teeth with yellow staining, gums pale pink and a bit dry.

Maddax ACCT-A-250281 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Maddax must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by MONDAY, JUNE 15TH at 10AM. Should Maddax's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.
Maddax was surrendered on May 16th after 10 years with his owner, who requested euthanasia due to age and unspecified medical concerns. He arrived with a ruptured abscess at the base of his ear, along with chronic ear infections and cysts within his ear canals. Maddax has been receiving ongoing antibiotics and consistent wound care since arriving at the shelter. His abscess improved significantly with treatment but recently ruptured again. He tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, which may be contributing to his difficulty fully resolving this infection in the shelter setting.
Maddax is an affectionate, social, and people-oriented cat who actively seeks out attention and interaction. He leans into care, enjoys connection, and remains engaged with people despite his ongoing medical needs. He deserves the chance to recover in comfort and stability. Maddax is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter who can continue his care, ideally in a home environment.

BEHAVIOR NOTES:
Per staff 6/11: Maddax was sleeping with his head facing the back of the kennel. He is in a top kennel, so I touched his hind end after opening the kennel door to get him to wake up. I may have startled him a bit, because he bumped his water bowl and it came flying out of the kennel. He was a little hesitant when I first touched him and shook his head, but I realized afterwards that he has wounds in the area I touched. He was very tolerant of pets on the other side of his head and neck.
Per staff 5/21: I went to meet Maddax and he was laying down in his cat condo. He meowed when I approached the door. I opened the door and he came right up to greet me. I pet him all over which he allowed and leaned into. He would take moments to rub against the bars and then come back to head butt my arm or hand. He is a super sweet, super soft love bug!

MEDICAL NOTES:
6/11 Vet Exam: Recurrent fluctuant swelling noted at base of left ear. By time of exam, abscess had ruptured again and was actively draining purulent discharge. Persistent middle and inner ear infection in left ear with recurrent abscess formation. Restart Zeniquin once daily for 4 weeks. Given FIV status and inability to resolve infection in a shelter setting, Maddax is being timestamped for urgent exit with rescue or experienced adopter.
5/26 Vet Exam: Wound at base of left ear has contracted significantly and developed a healthy granulation bed since starting Zeniquin. Mild erythema, pruritus, and crusty debris remain in both ears. As there is no longer concern for integrity of the tympanic membrane, to apply topical medication in both ears for ear infections. Continue Zeniquin as prescribed.
5/21 Vet Exam: Wound at base of left ear has improved but remains open and actively draining. Prescribed Zeniquin and SSD.
5/16 Intake Exam: Reported 10-year-old male surrendered for owner-requested euthanasia due to unspecified medical issues. Complete cataract in right eye. Both ears with ceruminous cystomatosis, worse on left, with purulent discharge and a ruptured draining abscess below left ear. Mild to moderate dental tartar and staining. Otherwise skin and lymph nodes within normal limits. Heart, lungs, and abdomen within normal limits. Bloodwork showed elevated white blood cell count with monocytosis, neutrophilia, and elevated globulin. FIV positive. Treated with Convenia and Onsior.

Daisy came to ACCT Philly on June 6th after her owner had to move to housing that did not allow pets. She is described as a laid-back but playful companion who enjoys long naps, and her owner felt she would do best in a quiet home with one older person. Based on her history, Daisy would likely prefer to be the only pet in the household.
Though she can be cautious with new people, Daisy has shown staff that beneath her reserved exterior is a sweet cat who enjoys affection on her own terms. Once she feels comfortable, she leans into gentle head and neck scratches, happily soaking up quiet companionship from those she trusts.
Daisy's recent senior exam revealed significant periodontal disease that will require a dental procedure with multiple tooth extractions as soon as possible. Her thyroid level also fell within a "grey zone" that warrants future monitoring. Due to her medical needs and the urgency of arranging dental care, Daisy is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner.

BEHAVIOR NOTES:
Per staff 6/11/26: Daisy was sleeping in her litter box when I approached. She was just a tiny bit hesitant at first and lip licked, then turned her head towards my hand when I pet down her back. However she absolutely loved neck scratches and leaned in for them! When I stopped petting her she began rubbing her cheek on the edge of the litter box.
Per staff 6/9/26: I went to say hello to Daisy, and she was scrunched up in her litterbox. She scrunched up even more once I approached her, but allowed me to pet her all over. I stopped every few seconds because her notes listed she has a short fuse, and she would sniff my hand every time. She seemed to enjoy head scratches, but was neutral aside from that, not soliciting more affection during the intervals.

Per owner surrender notes 6/6/26: Lazy, sleeps a lot and playful. Medium energy level. Litter trained, indoor only cat. No behavioral concerns noted by owner. Does not like other cats. Has not ever seen dogs. Isn't friendly with strangers until she gets to know them. Would do best in a home with one older person.
Per owner surrender notes 3/5/21: Cat has been attacking dog, scratching and trying to bite owner sometimes. She is a sweetheart, follows owner and likes chin scratched. Sometimes suddenly trying to bite. Snuggles up to dog, then suddenly turns and tries to pounce at dog. She can be really friendly when she wants to. She uses the litterbox and has a good appetite. Owner doesnt think she should be placed with dogs, cats, or kids. She needs a quiet home with patient owners. Ideal home would be quiet and calm, no other cats kids or pets and a patient owner who can train her a bit. She is a real sweetheart besides being set off by something.
Per staff 3/5/21: On morning of 3/5, Daisy drew blood on owner while trying to get her into a carrier to bring her into the shelter. The scratch was on her hand and drew a small amount of blood. Daisy often scratches and tries to bite and this was the most recent exposure.

MEDICAL NOTES:
6/9/26 Vet Exam: Significant periodontal disease, especially affecting teeth 104, 207, and 208. Spayed female in overweight body condition. FIV and FeLV negative. Mild neutrophilia and hyperglobulinemia. Mild hyperglycemia (likely a stress response). "Grey zone" thyroid level. Prescribed gabapentin. Will need a dental with multiple extractions as soon as possible. Recheck of T4 and glucose recommended in 3–6 months, or sooner if signs of hyperthyroidism or diabetes develop.
6/6/26 Intake Exam: Weight 12.96 lbs, overweight body condition (7/9). Eyes clear, ears clean, nose clear, coat and skin clean. Teeth stained with heavy tartar on molars, gums moist and red.
