This is what community looks like!

Community residents, leaders, and volunteers came to the table for the meal, which was designed to connect residents with organizations providing health and human services, benefits enrollment, and other programs focused on meeting basic needs like food access. Attendees shared a meal, and connected with Montgomery County Community Connections, the Montgomery County Office of Aging Services, VNA Community Services, Share Food Program, Montco Senior Adult Activities Center, and Penn State Extension.

Food banks are also seeing households increasingly reliant on their resources, said George Matysik, the executive director of the Share Food Program.

“Pantries that said they used to see folks come to them purely as a supplement are now seeing folks that are showing up at their pantry just to get their food,” he said. “They’re using this as the primary source of food for their families and we’re seeing that increasingly happening across our network, and so for our organization, it means we’re having to serve more folks more food with fewer resources.”

Matysik emphasized Share Food is doing everything it can to help those struggling with food insecurity, but that the increasing changes to SNAP are making this more difficult.

“We were not built to be able to serve the entire Greater Philadelphia area for the folks that are food insecure,” he said. “The work that we have done in our 40-year history has been supplemental, not meant to be the primary source of where people are getting their food assistance.”

Both states and recipients will see SNAP adjustments with some of these new changes.

School breaks should be a time for kids to recharge—not a time for families to worry about putting food on the table. 💚

Through the School Break Meals Initiative, Share Food Program is partnering with the Norristown Area School District to provide food assistance during winter and spring breaks, helping families bridge the gap when school is out of session.

With support from PA Health & Wellness, this collaboration will help ensure families have access to food during extended school closures.

“Partnerships like this showcase the incredible impact of community-focused collaboration. By working with Share Food Program, along with the generous support of PA Health & Wellness, we can ensure thousands of meal boxes reach our families when our schools are closed. This initiative directly strengthens our entire district community,” said Nicole Melia, director of food services in the Norristown Area School District.

We’re grateful for partnerships that bring communities together to make a meaningful difference for children and families.

Solving hunger doesn’t always mean making a donation or volunteering at a food bank. Sometimes, it starts with the people around you 💚

Share a food pantry or community fridge with someone who needs it. Help a neighbor navigate benefits or resources. Check in on an older adult. Support a school meal site. Show up for a local mutual aid group.

Small acts of community care can help make sure our neighbors know they’re not alone—and know where to turn when they need support.

For 40 years, Share Food Program has seen what’s possible when communities show up for one another.

This is just 5 of 40 Ways to Solve Hunger. What’s your way?

SNAP does more than help families put food on the table.

For children, SNAP can also help connect them to free breakfast and lunch at school. When families lose food assistance, the impact can reach far beyond the grocery budget.

According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, more than 1.5 million children have likely lost SNAP since July 2025, with potentially broader consequences for children’s access to food at school.

Food access doesn’t stop at the grocery store. And when families lose support, the ripple effects can reach our schools, our communities and our kids.
