We’re happy to report that, as of 6PM on Friday, August 21, 2026 the water main repair work is complete and the 400 block of South Street is officially reopened!

A huge thank-you to the crews from PWD, PGW, PECO, and the Streets Department who worked tirelessly every day to get the issue resolved.

During the repairs, we also caught an unexpected glimpse of the old trolley tracks and Belgian blocks that once made up the street (Slide 4). It was a wonderful reminder of the District’s rich history and the many stories, people, and lives that have shaped this vibrant corridor over the years.

We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful weekend on South Street! 💚

Banner Artist Spotlight: Jonathan Balbi

Jonathan Balbi was born and raised in South Philly. Everyone draws as a child, and he just never stopped.

When asked about the inspiration behind his banner design, Jonathan said, “South Street has a history as a Mecca of Philly culture, in particular music culture. As a shy kid, learning about DIY and underground music helped me come out of my shell and find community. My banner is in honor of the community that music builds.”

The South Street Banner Art Project is a public art initiative led by the South Street Headhouse District that transforms the corridor into a more vibrant, welcoming, and visually engaging destination.

Featuring original artwork by local Philadelphia artists, these banners amplify the incredible talent of the city’s creative community while also enhancing the streetscape and honoring South Street’s longstanding history as a place for artists, creatives, and countercultures.

This beautification project aims to foster a stronger sense of place, strengthen community pride, and create a more memorable experience for residents and visitors alike.

In the coming weeks, we’ll spotlight each featured artist and the story behind their design.

Banner Artist Spotlight: Shebani Rao

Shebani Rao is an illustrator, writer, and visual artist. Her work has been featured in The New York Historical, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, and Vox Populi, and by publications like McSweeney’s Internet Tendency and Lit Hub. She also teaches cooking classes in Philly.

When asked about the inspiration behind her banner design, Shebani said, “My banner is a celebration of the cultural foods of South Street, from gyros to arepas to jerk chicken. South Street and its restaurants, both past and present, are a testament to the beauty of melding flavors and cultures when the very idea of diversity is under threat. This piece brings together my passions for illustration and cooking in a visual love letter to South Street’s diverse cuisines.”

🚨 Second Update: South Street Water Main Break 🚨

As of today, Monday, August 17, 2026 water and electricity have been fully restored to South Street between 3rd and 5th Streets.

On Sunday morning, August 16, 2026, a water main burst on South Street near 4th Street. Crews from PECO and PWD worked together to secure the site and repair the water main break.

The hole has been filled and we expect more repair updates from the Water Department tomorrow.

In the meantime, South Street is closed to traffic between Leithgow and 4th Streets.

We will continue to bring you updates as we receive them.
