"I want you to drive safely because people care about you."

That message wasn't written by a safety expert. It was written by a 5th grader.

Through our "Kids Speaking Up for Road Safety" program, supported by , more than 4,000 elementary school students learned about distracted driving this school year. Then they did something incredible: they wrote personal cards to older students with messages about safe driving.

Sometimes the most powerful safety messages come from the youngest voices. These kids remind us that road safety is everyone's responsibility.

Thirteen-year-old Margay Schee was a bright honors student who dreamed of becoming an airline pilot. She loved music, surfing, skateboarding, volunteering at an animal sanctuary, and had a special love for animals.

Riding home from school one afternoon, Margay was killed when a distracted semi-truck driver looked away to reach for a dropped cell phone and crashed into the back of her stopped school bus.

Please remember Margay. Keep your eyes on the road. Nothing is worth a moment of distraction.

New research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reinforces something distracted-driving advocates have long suspected: cellphone use in crashes is significantly underreported.

Using data from safe-driving apps, researchers found that cellphone use before crashes may be undercounted in police reports by a factor of at least seven.

That matters. If we underestimate how often phones contribute to crashes, we also underestimate the true scope of distracted driving and the urgency of preventing it.

🆕 IIHS news | A new study from IIHS data confirms that far more drivers are using cellphones in the lead-up to crashes than is reflected in police reports.

“It’s widely accepted that police reports often fail to capture the role of cellphones in crashes. Many smartphone functions are hard for a witness to see, and drivers are reluctant to admit being distracted,” IIHS President David Harkey said. “Telematics are allowing us to understand the true magnitude of the problem.”

For Casey Feldman's family, one summer afternoon changed everything. Casey was 21 years old when she was killed by a distracted driver while walking to her summer job.

Reid Hollister was a 17-year-old student-athlete who loved soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. He was also a talented musician and a caring mentor known for his kindness, loyalty, and easygoing spirit.

Reid was killed when he lost control of his vehicle while driving distracted. Speed and wet roads also contributed to the crash.

Today, we remember Reid by choosing to stay focused behind the wheel. One moment of attention can save a life.

Thousands have stopped driving distracted because of Casey.

That's not just a headline. That's the reality of what this community has built together.

Since 2009, EndDD.org, a project of the Casey Feldman Foundation, has reached more than 500,000 students and adults with science-based distracted driving presentations. Joel Feldman, Casey's father, has personally given more than 1,000 presentations across the country.

Every person who puts the phone down. Every teen who speaks up when a friend or parent drives distracted. Every family that arrives home safely. That is Casey's legacy at work.

We can't bring Casey back. But together, we are making the roads safer for everyone.

Lanie Kruszewski was 24 years old. She was a JMU graduate, an athlete, and a talented cook who dreamed of attending culinary school.

While biking home from work in Richmond, Virginia, Lanie was struck and killed by a driver who was texting. The driver fled the scene before turning himself in days later.

Today, we remember Lanie by making the choice to stay focused behind the wheel. One moment of attention can save a life.

Seventeen years after Casey's death, her story continues to inspire action.

Casey's father and End Distracted Driving founder Joel Feldman continues to share her story and advocate for safer roads. Recently, he spoke with more than 100 firefighters at the invitation of the National Volunteer Firefighters' Council, encouraging them to help reduce distracted driving in their communities using EndDD's K–12 educational resources.

The response was overwhelmingly positive.

As Joel shared:
"I am more optimistic than at any time since Casey's death that young people can, and will, change the way all of us think about distracted driving and make our roads safer."

Every presentation. Every conversation. Every community reached is part of Casey's legacy.
