phia Counties in PA and Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties in NJ, nearly 3,700 children annually are more successful socially and academically because of the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence. Our Mission is to ignite the power and promise of youth and close the mentoring gap, by creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships and strengthening the quality of the mentoring field. By partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers and others in the community we are accountable for each child in our program achieving:
- Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships
- Avoidance of risky behaviors
- Educational success
- Our vision is that all youth achieve their full potential.

We recently gathered to celebrate both our high school and college graduates, as well as all 10 of our Shook Family Fund Scholars. It was a special opportunity to honor their achievements and the incredible journeys that brought them to this moment.

Thank you to our Bigs and Littles for the meaningful moments you’ve shared throughout your journeys together. Your stories are what mentorship is all about.

As you take your next steps, know that the impact of these relationships extends far beyond graduation day. The confidence, support, and connections you’ve built will continue to shape your lives, strengthen your communities, and inspire the next generation of young people to dream bigger, reach higher, and give back. Through consistent support, honest conversations, and shared experiences, Bigs help Littles navigate challenges, manage emotions, and discover their strength.

Since 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has delivered more than 10,000 trainings focused on mental health and trauma-informed support, because when mentors are supported, young people feel the impact.

We’re thrilled to share that Kathryn Fernandez has been named the next Chief Executive Officer of Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence.

Kathryn joins BBBSI after nine years as Chief Development Officer at Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia and brings decades of leadership experience in nonprofit growth, fundraising, mentorship, youth development, and community engagement, along with a deep commitment to the Philadelphia community and the young people we serve.

As we look ahead, we’re energized for this next chapter and the opportunity to deepen our impact across the region, strengthen mentoring relationships, and reach even more young people who need a champion in their corner.
