As we prepare to head back to Sierra Leone in June for the next session of our Softball for Success program, we were so happy to stop by the Leveling the Playing Field, Inc. warehouse earlier this week to pick up some equipment to take with us, including gloves, bats, face masks, soccer balls, cleats, and more! Thank you so much LPF for reducing barriers to play and making gear so much more accessible for young people, including the teenage girls in our program!

The fifth session of the spring More Than Sports Program with Community Of Compassion CDC was extra sweet as all 32 young people spent the evening exploring their creativity–the word of the day–through cookie decorating!🍪The kids really got into the activity and made some truly delightful and inventive cookies (that were also delicious to eat)! Everyone also enjoyed lots of other healthy snacks and treats, including soft pretzels! Thanks so much to our amazing volunteers including Leah Kimbrough, Monica Kates, Sam Romain, and Adam Herpolsheimer who made the night go off without a hitch and to the PHLY Foundation for making the program happen! Tonight we head onto the field for some softball which is sure to be a blast!

For our fourth session of the spring More Than Sports Program with Community Of Compassion CDC, we were so happy to have Change Up Sports volunteer and therapist Mike Butera facilitate an evening dedicated to mindfulness (the word of the day!) and coping skills. 32 young people spent the workshop participating in activities focused on helping them be present, manage and use their breathing, and cultivate relaxation and we are so thankful to Mike for donating his time to host such an important and much-needed session. Everyone also got to enjoy lots of healthy snacks and treats and we are very grateful to PHLY Foundation for making the More Than Sports program possible as well as to volunteers Shakeya Fearrington, Adam Herpolsheimer, Lisa Wood, and Katie Trott for helping the session run smoothly! Tonight the kids get to express their creativity through cookie decorating and we can’t wait!

Thank you so much to Change Up Sports board member and Philadelphia Adult League Softball captain Heena Desai for hosting her second annual limber sale at the PALS field last week to raise funds for our upcoming Softball for Success Summer Camp in Sierra Leone! The fundraiser brought in $648 to support the free seven-day camp for 47 girls which is amazing! The limbers, which are delicious icy desserts from Puerto Rico, were made by and we are so grateful to everyone who bought one (or more)! And, thanks again to Heena for hosting the sale—we appreciate it so much!

On Friday, we had such a wonderful time at Sahara West African Restaurant meeting with some of the participants in our upcoming group volunteer trip to Sierra Leone! The team of 13 volunteers will serve as coaches and counselors for the 47 teenage girls in our Third Annual Softball for Success Summer Camp in the capital of Freetown from June 13 to June 25, and we are so grateful that they are donating their time to be a part of the program! At the dinner, the team had the opportunity to get to know one another and prepare for the camp, all while enjoying some delicious Sierra Leonean food! Thank you so much as always to the amazing Sahara for hosting and providing such tasty meals!

Last Wednesday we were so excited to kick off the second annual spring session of our eight-week More Than Sports program with Community Of Compassion CDC in Cobbs Creek, made possible through a grant from PHLY Foundation! Community of Compassion CDC serves as one of six Community Evening Resource Centers (CERC) in Philly that are open from 7pm to 2am to provide a safe space for young people to go at night and we are thrilled to continue to partner with them to provide fun, positive, and inclusive sports, recreational, and youth development activities for two eight-week sessions a year! We got the spring session started with an evening of teambuilding activities designed to foster cooperation–which was the word of the day–and the 25 participants had such a blast! They also got to enjoy lots of healthy and tasty treats including their favorite: Krispy Kreme doughnuts! Thank you so much to our wonderful volunteers Rob Werkheiser, Lisa Wood, Heena Desai, and Monica Kates for donating their time to facilitate the session and to PHLY Foundation for supporting the program (and thanks to Philadelphia Adult League Softball player Dylan McCauley for nominating us for the grant)! The next session is a youth fitness workshop with The First Law Fitness and we can’t wait!

We are thrilled to share that we are headed back to Sierra Leone in June with a team of 12 volunteer coaches/camp counselors to facilitate our third annual seven-day Softball for Success Summer Camp for more than 47 teenage girls ages 12 to 21, and we need your help to make the program possible!

Softball for Success is our free sports-based youth development and girls empowerment initiative that is the first and only softball program for teenage girls in the country. The participants had an absolute blast in the program during our four-week winter session earlier this year, and we can’t wait to bring everyone back together for summer camp for the third year in a row from June 15 through June 21 with the support of our amazing team of volunteers from the US and Sierra Leone!

The program melds positive, inclusive softball instruction, practice, and games with holistic youth development activities including life skills and leadership workshops, educational and cultural activities, community service, and team building opportunities! Coordinated in collaboration with our partner Vintage Academy soccer club, the program also seeks to develop supportive adult connections, enhance well-being, build confidence, and reduce barriers to participation by providing meals, transportation, school supplies and fees, athletic clothing, personal care products, nutritional support for participants’ families, and medical and dental care.

You can make a concrete difference in the lives of the girls who are participating in the camp! Click on the link below to learn more and make a tax-deductible donation, or give in any of the following ways:

We want to say such a big thank you to Ila and Ashokkumar Desai (the parents of Change Up Sports board member Heena Desai) for donating over 100 boxes of much-needed medications including malaria treatment, antibiotics, and anti-nausea medication for our programming in Sierra Leone. These medications are a critical part of our first aid kit there and we are so grateful to the Desai family for their generosity! Medical care is very difficult for many people to access and afford in Sierra Leone, and, so far this year, we have covered the cost of treatment for 19 of the girls in our Softball for Success program for illnesses and conditions including malaria, anemia, UTIs, typhoid, dog bites, broken molars, eye infections, and more through our medical fund. These medications go a long way in helping to support this care and we are truly thankful!
