After eight weeks together, it is always bittersweet to wrap up the spring series of the More Than Sports program with Community Of Compassion CDC Fortunately, the weather cooperated and we were able to head outside for some softball which is a favorite activity! The 34 young people had a blast hitting, fielding, and just having fun out on the field. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed lots of tasty treats and got backpacks, school supplies, t-shirts, and trophies to celebrate and prepare them for the start of the next school year! Thank you so much as always to the terrific Community of Compassion staff for their ongoing partnership and to our team of volunteers including Mike Butera, Taylor Taranto, Heena Desai, and Adam Herpolsheimer who made the final session–and the past eight weeks–so wonderful. And, extra special thanks to PHLY Foundation for making the program possible–we cannot thank them enough! Finally, thanks to all of the amazing young people who took part in the program this session; can’t wait to see you again in the fall!

One of the most meaningful parts of the Softball for Success program is the closing ceremony. The girls not only have the opportunity to reflect and share about the program, but it’s also where participants are presented with a 100-pound bag of rice to take home to their families. Most of the girls and their families face significant food insecurity and rely on this rice, which helps provide meals for more than a month, to meet their nutritional needs. The girls are always so happy to be able to help contribute to their households in such a critical way with the rice–which is Sierra Leone’s staple food–and we are so grateful to all of the donors who make this much-needed part of the program possible. Earlier this year, we were especially grateful to P*e Cee and Sons for generously donating thirty 50-pound bags of rice for the girls and their families and allowing us to purchase the remaining 100-pound bags of rice at a discount! What an incredible donation! Thank you P*e Cee and Sons!

While many of the girls in the Softball for Success program love to dance, they had never tried salsa dancing before! However, that all changed when dance instructor Lashika Hemnani hosted a fantastic salsa dancing class with the girls earlier this year! They picked up the steps so quickly and had a blast doing it! We are so grateful to Lashika for donating her time to host such a wonderful workshop–thank you Lashika for being so amazing!

It was so amazing to see the girls in the Softball for Success program express their creativity and their feelings in the incredible art therapy workshop hosted by artist Zahra Fakih earlier this year! The session enabled the girls to process their emotions through art, reduce stress, and show off their artistic talents, all while having so much fun! Thanks so much to the wonderful Zahra Fakih for facilitating and creating such a special experience for the girls!🎨

We love making sure that the girls in the Softball for Success program have the opportunity to try as many new sports as possible (in addition to softball), and earlier this year we had the best time stepping out onto the courts for a tennis workshop! Hosted by our amazing friends at Support Sports in Sierra Leone and the Hill Station Tennis Club, the girls had a great time learning fundamentals of the game and being able to transfer some of their softball skills that they’ve learned over to tennis. We were also thrilled–thanks to a generous donation from Swarthmore Tennis and a visit to Leveling the Playing Field, Inc.–to be able to provide tennis equipment to use at the clinic as well as additional gear to support their amazing youth tennis program! Thanks for such an awesome day Support Sports in Sierra Leone and Hill Station Tennis Club!

Yoga is always one of our favorite activities (in addition to softball, of course!) and we had so much fun earlier this year having our friends from This is Yoga Sierra Leone host a yoga and meditation workshop for all of the girls in the Softball for Success program! The girls had the chance to relax, pay attention to their breath, work on their flexibility, and focus on their well-being, all while getting in some great stretches! Thanks so much to Edward Kekura Kamara and his team for facilitating the awesome session!

While the rain kept us indoors for two weeks in a row, we still had a blast at the seventh session of the spring More Than Sports program at Community Of Compassion CDC with some fun-filled teambuilding activities with an emphasis on kindness and teamwork! 34 young people joined us to see who could build the tallest tower using spaghetti and marshmallows, learn about each other through Get-To-Know-You Bingo, and get their hearts pumping with a Rock, Paper, Scissors Relay! Everyone also enjoyed some healthy snacks and treats, including cake for longtime CDC staff member Ms. Betty’s retirement! Thanks so much to our amazing volunteers including Shannon Reiss, Kathryn Riley, Adam Herpolsheimer, Monica Kates, Emily Neil, and Katie Trott for staying flexible and helping the kids have a great time despite the weather and to PHLY Foundation for making the program a reality with their support!

During the last session of Softball for Success, we were thrilled to bring the girls back to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the world-renowned conservation non-profit located outside of Freetown in the Western Area Peninsula National Park. Tacugama rescues and rehabilitates critically-endangered western chimpanzees and currently has over 100 chimps in their care. They also enforce wildlife laws and engage in community outreach, wildlife field research, environmental sustainability initiatives, conservation education, and alternative livelihoods programs for the community. It was amazing for the girls to learn more about their incredible work in such a beautiful setting and see so many chimps! Thank you so much to Tacugama for having us! You can learn more about Tacugama at tacugama.com

We can’t believe we leave for our Third Annual Softball for Success Summer Camp in Sierra Leone for 47 teenage girls in exactly one week! While we are preparing to head to Freetown with our team of volunteers, we wanted to share some of our favorite activities that happened off of the field from our Softball for Success winter session earlier this year! We always kick off Softball for Success with a supply distribution where the girls get to go “shopping” for a wide range of items that they need both for softball and for life! Because of your generous donations, the girls received new backpacks, school supplies, personal care products, athletic clothing, and so much more, making for such a great start! All of your contributions make such a difference for the girls in the program and we are so grateful for your support!
