Pennsville Rotary Profile.
Each week, we will single out a member of our club and have them answer a few questions.
This week’s spotlight is on 🥁 🥁 🥁
Ken Smith!
Q: What is your current occupation? Or, if you are retired, what did you previously do?
A: After 35 years as both a technician and manager in the telecommunications industry with NJ Bell, AT&T, D&D Communications, and lastly Tri-M Electric Construction, I retired in 2005. Currently, I am the treasurer of the Pennsville Historical Society, a board member of Mid-Atlantic States Career Development, and have assumed the duties of Quartermaster of the Pennsville VFW Post 1952 for 14 years.
Q: How many years have you been a Pennsville Rotary member?
A: I have been a member of the Pennsville Rotary for over 30 years, serving as a 2-term president, treasurer, and board member for over 20 years. Other Rotary responsibilities have included Assistant District Governor for District 7540 and 7505 for 4 terms.
Q: What do you enjoy most about being a Pennsville Rotary member?
A: I take enormous satisfaction in seeing the club grow from its past legacy years in the 1990s to rebuilding the club from the grassroots of the 2000-2010 years to its present status of having over 40 members dedicated to the betterment of the Pennsville community. I have always stressed that local club involvement should prioritize community first. The Pennsville Rotary has and continues to rise to that motto, "Service Above Self," by contributing to many needy and worthy programs within the township.
In retrospect, I find that the original leadership from my involvement going back to the early 1990s mentored me in what we should be giving back to the community. Great members who impacted me, who are now gone (Doc Liebeknecht, Cal Birchmire, Don Guthrie, Ralph Hassler, Bob Laughrey), to name a few, still inspire me and the club in doing the right things. The motto remains intact: “Service Above Self.”
