1. During World War II, American blood drives through the Red Cross collected more than 13 million pints of blood, which was processed into dried plasma and other products to treat wounded soldiers. This effort was critical to the U.S. military’s medical care and laid the foundation for the nationwide civilian blood program that followed.

2. Blood drives address a constant, critical need. Someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds for procedures like surgeries, cancer therapies, childbirth, anemia management, and emergency care after accidents. Blood drives from organizations like the Red Cross and community centers help maintain the supply that supports millions.

3. They save over 4.5 million lives annually through transfusions. About 1 in 5 hospital patients needs blood, and blood drives (which provide a large portion of the nation’s supply) enable this lifesaving care, especially for chronic conditions like sickle cell disease or during cancer treatment.
