"The American Lake Trail is a scenic backpacking trip that follows a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail through forests, wildflower meadows, alpine lakes, and open ridges with spectacular views of Nelson Ridge and Mount Rainier. Beginning at Chinook Pass, the trail climbs steadily before reaching beautiful American Lake.

Late August to early September is one of the best times to visit, as recommended by experienced hikers and Washington Trails Association trip reports. During this time, mosquitoes are typically much less active, and huckleberries and blueberries are often at their peak."

At I-MAC, we believe our adventures are about more than reaching a destination—they're about creating a welcoming community where friendships grow, new members feel at home, and memories are made one trail at a time.

🚗 Carpool & Recreation Pass Information

One of the best parts of our trips is sharing the ride! Participants are asked to help cover fuel and vehicle expenses by reimbursing their driver for the carpool cost listed in the trip description. Please bring cash on the day of the trip unless you've confirmed with your driver that they accept Venmo or another payment app.

🌲 Don't Forget Your Recreation Passes

Many of our hikes and backpacking trips take place on state or federal public lands that require a recreation pass. Depending on the destination, you may need one of the following:

• Washington Discover Pass – Required for many Washington State Parks and recreation lands.
• Northwest Forest Pass – Valid at many U.S. Forest Service day-use sites in Washington and Oregon.
• America the Beautiful Pass – Covers entrance fees at national parks and many federal recreation areas.

Please check your trip description ahead of time to see which pass is required. Being prepared helps ensure a smooth start to the adventure and supports the public lands we all enjoy.
