WDAA Spotlight Series: Robin Johnson & "Cici"

My name is Robin Johnson, and this is my seven-year-old American Warmblood Golden Opportunity, whom I affectionately call “Cici.” We’ve shared a fulfilling journey together for the past seven years. I adopted Cici when she was just two months old. She was an orphan foal, and I still vividly recall bottlefeeding her in my lap. She has been my greatest accomplishment as an equestrian. I’ve dedicated myself to nurturing her from the ground up.

Our Western Dressage journey began by sheer accident when Cici was two and a half years old. She had only been under saddle for about 45 days at the time, and I took her as a fill-in for my injured horse. I didn’t have high expectations, but I simply wanted her to experience the arena. To my surprise, she gave me everything she had, despite her imbalance and inexperience in Dressage arenas or tests. She performed those two intro tests as if she had been doing them her entire life, and we achieved remarkable scores in the mid-60s. That moment solidified my belief that Cici and I would enjoy this discipline for years to come.

As the years passed, we progressed through the levels and achieved numerous year-end grand champions at local shows. Our ultimate goal was to attend the 2025 World Championship Show. We worked tirelessly to ensure our readiness. Again, I didn’t have high expectations for winning anything; I simply wanted to have good rides, decent scores, and a happy horse. However, Cici had other plans. We performed in basic level, level one, freestyles, and some rail classes, where our team work led us to a World Championship in our costume freestyle and three top tens. I am eternally grateful for the heart and bond we share. She continues to teach me daily how to become a better equestrian.

Our journey continues as we embark on our move up to Level Two. I am filled with excitement for the coming year as we both continue to grow and thrive.

🚨 Attention Online International Challenge Exhibitors! 🚨

Before you submit your videos, please double-check these Tack Check MUST-DOs to avoid having your video rejected:

✅ Complete the entire tack check
✅ Make sure your sign is clearly visible and is the correct sign for your test
✅ Zoom in on the far end of the arena
✅ Make sure your tack check can be easily seen by the steward

🔍 Francie is reviewing bits with a magnifying glass, so let's make her job easier by zooming in and providing clear, detailed footage! The better we can see your equipment, the smoother the review process will be.

A few extra moments during filming can help ensure your entry is accepted.

Thank you!

WDAA Champion Spotlight: Cowboy & Candy Hill

My mom bought Cowboy for me from an online auction in 2019. He had gone unbid during the initial auction and landed in the Sunday sale, where only kill buyers were bidding. Although he was a grade horse with a completely unknown past, his fancy movement caught my mom’s eye, and that decision changed both of our lives.

Bringing Cowboy home marked my transition from lesson rider to horse owner. As a green rider paired with a green horse, I quickly learned that success would require patience, trust, and meeting him exactly where he was. Fortunately, I had the guidance of my incredible trainer, Margaret Kitts, whose commitment to never giving up on a horse has shaped our journey, along with her partner, Tim Cobb, who helped us navigate the long process of growing together.

Our path to success at the WDAA World Championship Show wasn't an overnight success. We competed at our first World Show in 2021, returned in 2023 and 2024, and made our fourth trip to the Lazy E Arena in 2025. After years of learning, growing, and persevering, we finally achieved the ultimate dream—earning a WDAA World Championship title.

That day, the stars finally aligned. In the warm-up, Cowboy was so soft and willing. We practiced some of the hardest maneuvers of the week with absolute ease and harmony, and in my mind, we had already won just in those simple, quiet moments. By the time we entered the ring, I tried to stay out of his way and let the work show up for us.

Cowboy is a little fancy, a little chatty at the shows, and a little sensitive (just like his mom!), and I couldn't do any of this without him. The truth is he is teaching me something new every day! I also couldn't even be on this journey without Maggie and Tim, who continue to listen to me babble about my dreams and challenges and help Cowboy and I grow in skill and confidence week after week.

One of my favorite things about the World Show is finding your favorite pairs, watching their rides come together epically, and seeing people crush their goals one ride at a time. To anyone new to this path: please be encouraged. World champions aren't always made in a year or two. Sometimes it takes many trips to Guthrie before it all clicks.

Cowboy and I both still have so much to learn, but every single show—local or World—is a gift, simply because of the willingness of my horse and the support of an amazing tribe at home and at the barn.

Attention WDAA Members, USEF has shared the following New World Screwworm webinar on June 18th at 4 PM ET.

On June 3, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed New World Screwworm in the umbilical area of a calf in Zavala County, Texas. This expansion into the United States is alarming. US Equestrian is partnering with the American Association of Equine Practitioners to bring you the information you need about the risk to horses and how you can keep your equine partners safe. Dr. Katie Flynn, Senior Staff Veterinarian for Equine Health and Biosecurity at USEF, will be joined by Dr. Neil Gray, sport horse practitioner in California, to give you the best information we have from state and federal animal health authorities.
