🎼 Our President, Dean Williamson, with Anthony Roth Costanzo, General Director and President of Opera Philadelphia, at last night’s after-party for Opera Philadelphia’s “Suddenly Last Summer” at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia.

“Suddenly Last Summer” is the first opera by MacArthur Fellow Courtney Bryan, based on Tennessee Williams’ Southern Gothic play. Its Philadelphia premiere runs through Sunday, October 25.

Anthony is also onstage this fall at the Metropolitan Opera in the world premiere of “Lincoln in the Bardo.”

We look forward to staying in touch with our friends in Philadelphia.

🎶🌹 A magnificent voice. An enduring legacy.

We mourn the passing of Martina Arroyo this week, one of the most distinguished Verdi sopranos of her generation. From Harlem to the world’s great opera stages, she was admired for her glorious voice, elegance, and extraordinary artistry.

Her devotion to nurturing young singers also touched our community: her foundation’s 2016 Prelude to Performance biographies recognize mezzo-soprano Shabnam Kalbasi as a finalist in our 2014 Palm Springs Opera Guild Vocal Competition and note her appearance at Opera in the Park—a meaningful reminder that great artistry lives on through the generations it inspires.

Brava, Martina. Your magnificent voice and generous spirit will not be forgotten. ❤️🎶

🎶 Thank you to everyone who filled St. Margaret’s in Palm Desert on October 2 for our Celebration of America’s 250th Birthday.

DeAndre Simmons and pianist Michele Scanlon gave us an afternoon of American song we’ll be talking about for a while, and it was a pleasure to share it with such a warm, attentive audience. 👏

Next up is our Season Opener on Saturday, November 7: Opera Under the Stars at the Rancho Mirage Amphitheater, with the Coachella Valley Symphony performing highlights from Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. 🌙

FREE CONCERT! 🇺🇸 In two weeks, the Palm Springs Opera Guild marks America’s 250th birthday with Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs.

Acclaimed bass-baritone DeAndre Simmons performs with pianist Michele Scanlon on Friday, October 2, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Palm Desert.

Copland’s arrangements of these folk songs capture the humor, faith, and resilience of the American experience. They remain among the most beloved works ever written by an American composer. 🎹
