Our speaker for the February 5th meeting was Marianne Benson of Desert Friends of the Developmentally Disabled (DFDD). The primary focus of the organization is providing dental care for the developmentally disabled children and adults in the Coachella Valley and Riverside County who aren't insured can’t afford to pay for it. The population they serve has difficulty finding dentists, because they are often difficult to deal with, and in 2010, MediCal stopped paying for most dental services altogether. The organization has received accolades in the press and professional publications for their work. DFDD has had to rely on "word of mouth" to inform those in need of dental services, because the governmental agencies have maintained that sending an informational notification would violate privacy laws. The organization now has its own clinic that is staffed 5-6 days a week. Their services are becoming more utilized as the information is becoming more widely known. DFDD needs volunteers, a grant writer, and of course finances to continue growing its program. Their website is: http://dfddnow.org/Mission/.
