Once again we see that God watches over our little church. We had a chimney fire due to a squirrel nest in the chimney. Everyone is fine, except the squirrel. We said a prayer for him and he was placed in the woods. But here is how it all went down:

When we entered the sanctuary this morning, it was cold. The furnace did not turn on as programed at 6am to warm the church prior to services. One of our congregants, who has an HVAC business, looked at the thermostat and said the battery was dead. No big deal, new battery and furnace fired up and started warming the sanctuary. During service, another of our congregants moves from his seat to sit on the back pew, because his small son was playing and he did not want him by the stairs. As he was about to sit, he says there is smoke coming from the chimney area. The two congregants who are HVAC guys literally flew downstairs, back up the stairs and outside, then back inside and say there is smoke coming from the top of the chimney. The building was evacuated and 911 called. Oh and several of our congregants are volunteer fire fighters! They had everyone calmly leaving the building and people either went home or waited in the parking lot because, well, we love our church and this was concerning to say the least! In comes the wonderful volunteers from Riverside Firehouse and Quaker Farms Firehouse. These men and woman were wonderful. They quickly were up on the roof, figured out the problem, put the nest fire out, removed both squirrel and nest and made sure all was safe in the building. We have never been so grateful for our towns awesome volunteers! Thank you all! So, we have to put a new liner in the chimney as ours was clay (old building) and needs replacement now. We are also putting in a new furnace, because ours is old and we want to not worry about something happening again! Calls were made and chimney liner and furnace going in this week! We should have heat for next Sunday. God was present and had the right people in the right places and no one was hurt and our church is fine. Thank you God! Please note that all meetings scheduled for this week are canceled. We should be back to normal next week!

Special shout out to all the volunteers who helped during the event (you know who you are), The Riverside Firehouse for the use of the space to hold the event, the two volunteer firefighters who stayed to make sure we didn't need anything, and Jennies Pizza in Monroe who generously donated the Pizza.
