Oxford American Legion Post 174 would like to thank and congratulate Alex Hess of Oxford Boy Scout Troop 1; who recently completed his Eagle Scout project. Post 174 annually conducts a dignified disposal ceremony of unserviceable flags. The ceremony is conducted outdoors at night and a small fire is burning for the disposal process. The Legionnaires take their stations for the ceremony and burn the flags with the dignity and respect they deserve; always participating in this ceremony is Oxford Troop 1. The Post encourages the public to drop off their unserviceable flags at our Post for disposal; but unfortunately, they had to do this during business hours or place the flags in a plastic bag and tie it to the door k**b. For many years we were in need of a drop-off box to facilitate an easy drop off. Alex Hess has come to the rescue and saved the day. Alex heard about our dilemma and offered to take on this mission for his Eagle Scout project. He formed a team consisting of members from his troop and family members; under the leadership of his Scoutmaster Marisa Tyger. The project involved stripping and sanding off the paint of a very old mailbox, grinding off rust, priming and applying several coats of high gloss auto paint. He then contacted his cousin in California who designed and fabricated the decals for the box, under Alex’s direction. A new lock was installed and the project was finally completed. We cannot thank Alex enough for what he did for our Post and we wish him the best in his future endeavors. Pictured, is Alex with our Post Commander, Ron Callanan, along with detailed pictures of his project.
