Voices for Children Advocacy Center Shiawassee TRUTH IN NUMBERS:

The pain and cost of child abuse and neglect are literally beyond counting. WHO IS IMPACTED? No one is immune.

We are dedicated to serving the child victims and families of child abuse in Genesee and Shiawassee Counties and enhancing the lives of all children through treatment, education, and by increasing community awareness. The statistics don’t lie.

• One in four girls and one in six boys have been inappropriately touched before the age of 18.
• The FBI estimates that only one out of ten child abuse and neglect cases are reported. Abuse and neglect are unfortunately common occurrences. Much of it happens in secret and in silence, and is thus unreported and not tracked. However, abuse and neglect are not just issues that occur in big cities, urban areas, or among low-income people. The rate of abuse and neglect reported in Shiawassee County is roughly the same as the national rate. It crosses every boundary of race, ethnicity, and income. Since 2017, Congress has observed October 28th as National First Responders Day! It is a day set-aside to honor, and thank, the men and women who take action when there is an emergency at hand.

First responders play a vital role in the safety of the children in our community, and in the investigative process when there is suspected abuse. When crisis arises, these men and women respond with bravery and heart.

From 911 operators to law enforcement, to fire fighters, to paramedics, to medical technicians, thank you for your service to the Shiawassee County community! We appreciate and celebrate you today and every day!

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Kurt Allen Moffit, who passed away on October 18, 2026, shortly after his retirement from law enforcement.

Officer Moffit dedicated decades of his life to serving and protecting our community. Throughout his distinguished career, he served with the Chesaning Police Department, the Owosso Police Department for 31 years, and the Durand Police Department for an additional 10 years.

Beyond his service in law enforcement, Officer Moffit was a valued member of our Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), bringing his experience, dedication, and commitment to the work we do to protect children and support families impacted by abuse. His role on our team was part of a larger legacy of service, integrity, and compassion.

Officer Moffit believed in doing what was right, treating others with dignity and fairness, and lending a helping hand to those in need. These values are at the heart of the work we do every day, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to work alongside someone who embodied them throughout his life and career.

On behalf of Voices for Children, we extend our deepest condolences to Officer Moffit’s family, friends, former colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. We are especially thinking of our MDT partners who are grieving the loss of a respected colleague and friend.

Thank you, Officer Moffit, for your years of service, your commitment to our community, and the difference you made in the lives of others. Your service will not be forgotten, and your legacy will continue through the many lives you touched.

Rest in peace, Officer Moffit. You will be missed.

We are incredibly grateful to the American Legion for once again supporting Voices for Children with a generous donation following their annual golf outing! ⛳️

Our Program Director was honored to volunteer at this year’s outing, and we are so thankful that the American Legion continues to think of Voices and the children and families we serve.

We are also incredibly grateful to Voiture 756 – Shiawassee County for matching the American Legion’s donation! Your continued partnership and generosity help make an even greater impact for children in our community.

After the donation, members of the American Legion and Voiture 756 took a tour of our center to learn more about Voices, our programs, and the services we provide to children and families. We are always grateful for the opportunity to share our mission with those who support our work.

The American Legion and Voiture 756 work closely together, and we are so fortunate to see that spirit of partnership extend to Voices for Children.

Thank you for your generosity, your continued support, and for taking the time to learn more about the work we do. We are grateful to have you in our corner! 💙

We had the sweetest visitors at Voices for Children! Three young ladies stopped by our center to donate stuffed animals that will be given to children who come to Voices for support and services.

But they didn’t just bring a donation—they also took a tour of our center and learned more about what we do and how we support children and families in our community.

We love seeing our community give back, and we especially love when kids are the ones making a difference for other kids.

Thank you, Iris, Maizy and Amelia, for thinking of Voices and for helping us make our center a little more comforting for the children who walk through our doors. Your kindness matters more than you know! 💙
