The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art is offering its FREE “Imaginative Surrealism” Art Camp, sponsored by RiverValley Behavioral Health, from July 6 through July 10. Young artists ages 6 to 17 will explore the Surrealist art movement through hands-on projects that encourage creativity, experimentation, and dreamlike expression.

Each day features a different project:

Monday, July 6 – Magical Menagerie
Campers will sculpt fantastical creatures while exploring shape, color, texture, and character. Students will learn how sculpture transforms ideas into three-dimensional forms and create creatures inspired by dreams and imaginary worlds.

Tuesday, July 7 – Sketch to Stage
Guest artist Michael Chann will guide students through puppet-making, including the creation of two different puppets. Participants will also learn basic storyboarding and how ideas are developed for performance and film.

Wednesday, July 8 – Morphology Mashup
Using colored pencils and watercolors, campers will transform magazine images into surreal dreamscapes by altering environments, blending reality with fantasy, and adding unexpected elements.

Thursday, July 9 – Optical Oddities
Students will design imaginative eyeball-themed mixed media artwork, beginning on paper and evolving into three-dimensional creations using layering and sculptural techniques.

Friday, July 10 – Chromatic Dreams
Inspired by avant-garde art, campers will create vibrant tie-dye backgrounds with layered black marker designs that evolve into dynamic, dreamlike compositions.

Camp sessions run in two-hour blocks, with morning (9–11 a.m.) and afternoon (1–3 p.m.) options.

This program is part of the museum’s annual series of free seasonal art camps for local children. All camps are taught by professional artist/educators and are offered at no cost, though reservations are required.

Micki Angelo and friends have returned from a much-needed vacation and are excited to welcome young visitors back to Artland! During their time away, they enjoyed sipping coffee by the Blue Bridge, listening to lively music at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum, stopping to smell the flowers, spending fun-filled days playing at Smothers Park, and OF COURSE looking at beautiful art! Now refreshed and ready for adventure, Micki Angelo and troupe can't wait to greet kiddos and share in the creativity and imagination waiting at the museum!
