Goodfellows Club of Owensboro

Goodfellows Club of Owensboro Rather than reporting that the organization was disbanding and the parties would end.

The mission of the Goodfellows Club is to provide resources and services to assist in meeting physical, social and psychological needs of schoolchildren at risk in Owensboro and Daviess County. In 1916 a young newspaper editor named Lawrence Hager was assigned a story on “The Charity Girls,” an organization that had sponsored annual Christmas parties for needy children in Owensboro since 1911. Hag

er (then editor of the Owensboro Inquirer and later editor of the combined Messenger-Inquirer) began the first Christmas party because “no child should be forgotten at Christmas.”

The Goodfellows Club began that day and continues today, providing Christmas toys, clothing, shoes, dental care, and coats for needy children. 100% of all donations go directly to meet local schoolchildren’s needs. Since school personnel have first hand knowledge of students’ needs, they have the responsibility of identifying students at risk, requesting Goodfellows assistance and responding with appropriate clothing distribution. The shared responsibility between the local school systems and the Goodfellows Club assures that children’s needs are addressed quickly and fairly. Goodfellows Club meets more than the everyday needs of clothing, coats, shoes, and dental care. When emergencies such as tornadoes, floods, and house fires arise, Goodfellows Club responds. Children left with little after a disaster are assisted immediately with the assistance of local school personnel

The Public Life Foundation of Owensboro has supported local journalism and community projects in our community for over three decades. Over the past 10 years, its focus has been on early childhood, and it has pledged more than $4 million to support early childhood education programs in Daviess County.
In addition, the PLFO has been a tremendous partner to the Goodfellows Club, providing office space, utilities, printing, office management, and more. The PLFO Foundation has provided funding to maintain the Goodfellows Club's administrative operations for many years to come, ensuring that every dollar contributed by donors will continue to be spent on the needs of disadvantaged children in Daviess County.
The Owensboro-Daviess County community has been immensely blessed by the Public Life Foundation of Owensboro, and we want to thank the Hager Family, the board of directors, and the current executive director, Joe Berry.

Having healthy children is critically important. Dental care is a major part of ensuring that each child receives the care and treatment they need to perform their best in all aspects of their life.

Dental care is costly, and not all children and families have the financial resources to provide the necessary treatment in a timely manner. The schools tell us this is a significant need, and we are fortunate that the Goodfellows Club can provide assistance when emergency treatment is needed.
