Red vanishes first.

Dive down a reef wall and watch the colours go: red within a few metres, then orange, yellow, green, until only dim blue is left at two hundred metres. Layer by layer, the sea darkens: "darknesses, one above another" (24:40).

Taller than a skyscraper. Invisible from a ship.

In the South China Sea, internal waves around 170 metres high, taller than a fifty-storey building, have been measured rolling for hundreds of kilometres underwater, while ships above barely notice. Satellites catch only faint lines on the surface. A book recited fourteen centuries ago spoke of a deep sea with "waves, above which are waves".

Fridtjof Nansen's ship, the Fram, crawled almost to a halt in calm Arctic water while its engine worked hard. The cause, found by Vagn Walfrid Ekman: the ship's power was being poured into hidden waves on the boundary between fresh meltwater and the salt sea below. Waves no one on board could see.

Red disappears first.

Dive into the sea and colours vanish one by one: red within a few metres, then orange, yellow and green. By two hundred metres only a dim blue is left; below a thousand, nothing. The Qur'an's word in 24:40 is ẓulumāt, darknesses, in the plural: layer upon layer, one above another.

Darkness upon darkness.

Sunlight dies in layers as you go down: red first, then orange, yellow, green, until only dim blue remains, and below a thousand metres nothing at all. The Qur'an's word is ẓulumāt, darknesses, plural: "darknesses, one above another" (24:40).
