Today, on National Aging with HIV Awareness Day, I’m at USCHA surrounded by people, stories, and communities that remind us that living with HIV is a journey, not a moment.

Many people have been living with HIV for decades. They have witnessed tremendous changes in treatment, prevention, advocacy, and community care, while carrying their own stories of resilience, loss, love, and survival.

These photos and videos from NMAC and USCHA are a small glimpse of the people who continue to shape this movement.

Aging with HIV means we must continue talking about whole-person health, quality of life, stigma, loneliness, housing, mental well-being, and the importance of community.

Today, we honor those who have been living with HIV for years and decades, and we recognize the generations that continue to move this work forward.

Today and everyday, we remember the people we have lost, honor those who are still here, and recognize that Overdose is preventable.

For Latinx & LGBTQIA+ Communities, Stigma, Discrimination, Language barriers, Isolation, Immigration fears, and Limited access to culturally responsive care can create barriers to support.

But we can change how we show up & respond.

• See the person, not the stigma.
• Check our biases.
• Know the signs. Carry Naloxone/Drug testing Strips & know how to use it.
• Respond with compassion—not shame.
• Create spaces where people feel safe asking for help.
• Know the local organizations providing harm reduction services in your community.

HIV Faith Awareness Day

Today, we recognize the power of faith communities to create spaces rooted in love, support, education, and dignity for everyone affected by HIV.

Faith and justice can walk hand in hand. When our communities talk openly about HIV, we promote testing, prevention, treatment, and, most importantly, help break down stigma.

HIV does not define a person. There is no place for stigma in our communities.

At QLatinx, we continue building communities where people living with HIV, LGBTQ+ people, and all of our Latinx families can feel seen, heard, respected, and loved.

Día de Concientización sobre el VIH/SIDA en el Sur — 20 de agosto
El Sur de Estados Unidos representa más del 52 por ciento de los nuevos diagnósticos de VIH en el país, a pesar de tener solo el 38 por ciento de la población total. Detrás de esta cifra hay barreras reales: pobreza, falta de acceso geográfico a servicios de salud, y un estigma que sigue silenciando a nuestras comunidades.
En Florida Central, y especialmente en nuestras comunidades Latinx e inmigrantes, estas barreras se sienten todos los días. Por eso el trabajo de QLatinx no se detiene: seguimos conectando a nuestra gente con pruebas gratuitas, con PrEP y PEP, y con espacios donde hablar del VIH no da miedo ni vergüenza.
Hoy nos unimos al Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day para recordar que expandir las pruebas, eliminar el estigma, y conectar a las personas con tratamiento y prevención no son metas del Sur solamente. Son nuestras metas, aquí, en nuestra propia comunidad.
Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD) is observed every August 20 to address the disproportionate impact of HIV in the Southern United States. Despite making up roughly 38 percent of the U.S. population, the South accounts for over 52 percent of new HIV diagnoses, driven by poverty, limited healthcare access, and persistent stigma.
QLatinx stands with our Latinx and immigrant communities in Central Florida, working every day to expand testing, dismantle stigma, and connect people to PrEP, PEP, and treatment. Today we recommit to that work, together.
