Director Richard Kelly has thanked married producers Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas for ensuring that Donnie Darko even got a theatrical release. Following it's disastrous Sundance premiere, the film's distributor was planning to send the film direct-to-video (which to be fair was a big market back in the day). Nolan and Thomas said no and arranged a special screening for the distributors to show the film's value. They also gave some helpful critique, leading Kelly to insert countdown cards ("Twenty Days Remain") and conduct a reshoot to fill some plot holes.

We'll never know what the film was like before, but you can find out on Wednesday how the additions landed! Come see it on the big screen with us at !

We’ve started selling out screenings and running out of space! We love your excitement, but we want to set expectations while keeping the warm and welcoming vibe. Tickets remain free, but we’re limiting the number of them. That means we know there will be space for walk-ins; we just can’t promise how much.

If you don’t have a ticket, we encourage you to come back and hang with us before we open up those remaining seats. We certainly hope there will be room for all, but we can’t promise that. We love the community atmosphere of Cinnabar and are committed to protecting that as we grow.

Donnie Darko premiered at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival...and bombed. Director Richard Kelly laments that audiences wrote it off as a big-budget film because of it's CGI, which were brand new in independent films at the time. Further, connections between high school kids and guns triggered post-Columbine angst and people misunderstood the ending as a promotion of su***de...

To make matters worse, the film's theatrical release came one month after the 9/11 terrorist attacks...and it's no spoiler to say the film opens with an airplane engine crashing into a house.

Kelly credits UK audiences for giving the film a chance a year later, when the film surged leading up to Halloween in 2002. Like many cult classics, it was just a bit ahead of its time, and we can't wait to dig into it together next week!

Y'all excited for this one?! 🎃 Last we checked tickets were already gone...which is a first to say the least. We still expect to have plenty of space for walk-ins, so don't dismay if you missed the ticket rush! We'll be explaining our new process more here soon, and instructions went out on the newsletter today (which you should definitely sign up for if you don't get it yet).

The word is definitely out that we're throwing it back to Donnie Darko on Oct 14th at ! Our host will be himself, who actually hasn't solo hosted in almost two years. 🤔 Here's why he can't wait to watch this one together: "I first watched Donnie Darko in my college dorm's basement, crowded around a small TV (with a screen I couldn't read) while sitting on carpeted stairs. In other words, the perfect place for the weird, eerie, layered, existential world of Donnie Darko to shine through. Get ready to explore growing up, the American suburbs, interconnection, and of course the end of the world on Halloween night."

We'll have special treats for Halloween too and some small trivia games and prizes, plus Zymarium goes ALL OUT for the season (if you didn't know). Y'all are in for a treat.

It's not just screenings, Subplot is back!

We're looking forward to a Saturday morning of curiosity and connection. We've got 20 spots for a guided, docent tour at the Morse Museum at 10:30am. Then we'll meet for lunch after at 4 Rivers (Fairbanks) to check in on life and creative projects.

The longest conclave in history lasted 1006 days (or nearly three years), running from November 1268 to September 1271 before electing Pope Gregory X. The new Pope introduced seclusion, arguing that outside influences were confounding the sacred process. The results were immediate, and since 1831 no papal conclave has lasted more than four days.

Throwing it back to our 75th anniversary screening last month! We had such a rich time watching and discussing Monster and even had to put the mystery ending to a vote. 🗳

Huge thanks to for hosting a great evening and for all of her invaluable support to Cinnabar over the years. Rachel, we're really going to miss you but wish you all the best at grad school! 🎒

No filming was allowed inside Vatican City, so the Sistine Chapel shown in the film was recreated in Cinecittà, the famous Italian film studio. The contemporary shade of red worn by cardinals was also changed, as costume designers preferred a more vibrant shade from the 17th century.

Conclave, however, is known as a remarkably faithful film to the proper Catholic form, so much so that cardinals in 2025 (and even the eventual Pope Leo himself) watched and studied the film in order to know what to expect from the arcane proceedings!
