Director Hirokazu Koreeda noted the importance of nature in the film Monster, a feeling many of us can likely share or at least remember a time when the outdoors was enjoyable. 🥵

"Their freedom comes when the boys are together in nature and away from home or school. The natural environment, when they're playing outside, walking and even playing, is lit by sunshine and vibrancy—that's where they can be themselves and be true to who they are."

Monster was the final film score composed by Ryûichi Sakamoto, who died after a long battle with cancer in March 2023. Sakamoto had not scored a Japanese film in years, working on The Revenant (2016) among many others. Sakamoto's lone Oscar was earned in 1988 for The Last Emperor.

Director Hirokazu Koreeda remarked, "It's a great loss to have such a major figure in the [film] music industry gone now, but I was very honored to have been able to work with him on his last film."

Director Hirokazu Koreeda once had this to say about the title (spoiler – it's not a horror film): "Monster evokes what happens when you see and hear many different emotions. And, it's something that's born and disappears between people, so I thought it was a very good title in that it's multi-faceted. It was interesting that schools can be monstrous and the feelings of mothers can be negative, but they're born out of a strong love for their sons and not necessarily out of evil."

"Happiness is something anyone can have."

We loved our dual July events and are excited to be back at next week! This time will be presenting Monster, a Japanese film about family right in time for back to school. Leave the kids at home though (21+ at the meadery) and make a plan to join us! Here's why Rachel picked it:

"Monster is a unique drama. It plays out like a mystery, but at its core is a story about love and its limits. Is a mother's love enough to protect her child from the world? Monster haunted me for days after I first watched it, but it's far from a tragic story. Instead, it asks how we can liberate ourselves from expectations. Perhaps, by returning to the child in us."
