June 16 – Skagway (NPS Stewardship Day)
Worked with NPS staff Cat and Rory at Slide Cemetery and Chilkoot Campground. The team cleaned two historic headstones, brushed vegetation from the cemetery entrance and grounds, and cleared encroaching brush along the ½-mile trail to Chilkoot Campground. Additional work included replacing 6 picnic table planks, tidying campsites and fire rings, collecting trash, and processing approximately one-half cord of firewood for campground visitors. Another productive day supporting National Park Service facilities and historic sites.

The group will conclude their trip and last night with a train ride on the historic White Pass train route followed by dinner at the Skagway brewery.

Today we teamed up with the National Park Service to help reconstruct a replica of the historic Patterson-McDermott Cabin, the last original standing cabin from the Klondike Gold Rush era. Using traditional tools, we peeled bark from spruce logs and debarked about 320 feet of logs for this restoration project. We wrapped up the day with a scenic float on the Taiya River and a group dinner at Chilkoot Trail Outpost.

June 14 – Skagway Rest Day
After breakfast, the group enjoyed a day exploring the Skagway area, including Dyea Flats at low tide, the historic Dyea townsite, Dyea Cemetery, downtown Skagway, the Gold Rush Cemetery, and Lower Reid Falls. Participants had free time for hiking, shopping, and sightseeing.
The day concluded with a wonderful dinner at the lodge prepared by Cortny and Claire, featuring chicken pot pie, fresh salads, side dishes, and dessert. A relaxing day of local history, scenery, and exploration.

Today our volunteer crew worked in Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, hiking 7 miles along the Chilkoot National Historic Trail while clearing encroaching brush. Despite steep climbs up Saintly Hill and 450 feet of elevation gain, the team used loppers, hand saws, garden shears, and a tree-trimming saw to help keep this historic trail safe and accessible for visitors. Another great day of stewardship in one of Alaska’s most iconic landscapes!

June 12 – Travel Day to Skagway
The group departed Juneau early this morning aboard the Alaska Marine Highway ferry and enjoyed a beautiful crossing with sightings of humpback whales and even some Dall's porpoises. After arriving in Skagway, participants attended a National Park Service orientation and bear safety briefing at the Chilkoot Trail Permit Center before settling into the Chilkoot Trail Outpost Lodge. The day concluded with a visit to historic Dyea, views along the Taiya River, and sightings of two black bears in the area.

Alaska Consrvation team update: Today we concluded our work with the Juneau Ranger District by splitting into two teams to complete our final projects.

One group finished preparing the base for the new 400-foot trail at Point Louisa by spreading the remaining gravel and filling any bare spots with beach rock. The team also removed old boards that had become a makeshift footpath, restoring the area with duff and sod. Afterward, they walked the adjacent Auke Recreation Trail, trimming back overgrown vegetation.

The second group used loppers and saws to clear vegetation along the Dredge Lake, Moose Lake, D**e, River, and Pit Trails, improving both hiking and overgrown bike trails.

We reunited for lunch at the Skater’s Cabin Picnic Shelter, enjoying yet another spectacular view of Mendenhall Glacier. We took the opportunity to thank the U.S. Forest Service trail crew and their leadership for their continued support. In return, they commended our volunteers for their hard work and dedication, noting that we had exceeded their expectations.

Machu Picchu Day 8: Today, our travelers enjoyed a second visit to the Llaqta (citadel) of Machu Picchu, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. It was a spectacular morning, with clear sky and bright sun. It turned out to be all about just soaking up the sun, the clear air, and the magnificent landscape of the sacred apus mountains) multiplying on the horizon to infinity.

Day 7 of the ConservationVIP Volunteer Trip to Machu Picchu.

Today, the volunteers finished their vegetation removal project on the second Inca wall, next to the Manuel Chávez Ballón Museum. They carried out a magnificent effort removing a total of 41 bags of invasive vegetation from an area of ​​1,430 square feet. Afterward, they were rewarded with a descent to the Vilcabamba River to reach the ruins of the third Inca wall, which is not accessible to visitors.

The spectacular sunshine shining on the white river stones gave the volunteers the opportunity to appreciate another perspective of the Machu Picchu landscape, along with its beautiful wild orchids and flowers along the way.

Alaska Volunteer Trip Update - for June 10 – Point Louisa Trail Project, Tongass National Forest.

Today our travelers continued projects with U.S. Forest Service partners at Point Louisa, completing the base rock layer along the entire 400-foot trail corridor. Travelers moved and placed thousands of pounds of rock, installed natural trail-edge barriers using sod and large beach rocks, and removed five illegal fire sites.

The project will help guide visitors along a defined route while protecting sensitive cultural and natural resources. The day concluded with a well-earned dinner at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake, celebrating another productive day of stewardship in Southeast Alaska.
