We held our Saturday tours yesterday and our event was enhanced by the presence of the Archaeology Department of St. Mary’s College; specifically the project headed up by Dr. Cynthia Van Gilder and her students who have been doing a dig on the premises for months. Dr. Van Gilder took time out to come up the hill during the two public tours and talk about what they have found and the project’s goals.

And by the way there are open spots for next Saturday’s tours (September 19). Please visit moragaadobe.org to sign up for those open spots! We have limits on how many visits we can host there so do take advantage and come for a free tour. We only ask for advance booking due to limitations of the tour group numbers and actual parking capacity:

In the course of doing a report about the 250th anniversary of the Anza Expedition’s arrival in SF, the Moraga Adobe ended up becoming a part of the story.

Joe Rosato Jr. has the story of the descendants of the Anza colonists and the seeds that grew one of the world’s great cities.

One of the products of our collaboration with local college students at Saint Mary’s College is this short video, explaining how our custom beds were made by craftsmen John Grafton and Joe Claus. We just posted this on our YouTube channel. Now, John and Joe have their own channel with much longer videos but this short one might be used during tours and such.

Here is an update on our tours at the Adobe from Teresa Long, Museum Committee Chair:

“Since officially starting our tours in February, we have had an amazing amount of interest in the Moraga Adobe. As of May 29th, we have had 421 total visitors to the adobe this year, this includes public, private and school tours. Of those visitors, 166 were Moraga 3rd grade students. We have had 15 open days at the museum so far – just half of the maximum of the 30 days allowed per year. We are scheduled for tours through June, with more public tours to be added for July and in the Fall months.

Student Participation
We are excited about of our collaboration with St. Mary’s College in Moraga. Their public history class provided us with 5 college student volunteers who participated in essential museum activities throughout the Spring semester. The students helped with being docents, creating videos, and helping categorize and label our museum collection.”

Here are a few photos of our younger visitors this Spring:

We reached another important function to our purpose of sharing the Adobe with the public: school visits!!! Third-graders from Moraga schools came by the carloads and walked through the adobe after hearing informational comments by president of the FJMA Kent Long. This visit was Friday, April 17. They also visited another day and we figured that a total of 122 students came.
We continue to host visits on selected weekend dates. See www.moragadobe.org to schedule a visit.

We had our first Official Official Tour! I say it twice because we have had some other groups in but last Sunday was our first official open public tours (by appointment of course)). We had three different sets of visitors come in and see the Adobe. It was very exciting for us after spending the last 17 years envisioning such a thing. To book a tour visit www.moragaadobe.org and find a time slot. Under the conditions that we operate (very limited parking, fire code, neighborhood considerations, personnel, drop-ins are NOT possible.

After almost 20 years of fundraising, meetings and planning, the Moraga Adobe now begins its journey of being a destination you can visit!
You can now go directly to the FJMA website to get a spot in the tours.

We are located within a developed residential neighborhood. For this reason, we will never be open for drop-ins and we are further restricted by parking spaces, fire safety capacities and a city-mandated limit of annual visits. So visitors are asked please not to come WITHOUT a reservation.

We are nowhere near finished with our landscaping or interior furnishings but we feel it’s time to share this with the public. We are especially eager to show all who donated to the cause and have wondered just when they could finally see the place!

To book a tour, go our website, scroll down and look for the reserve button by date. For group visits, we are reserving special time slots, available by email inquiry. We are currently listing spring dates and will post later dates as we see how things are working out.

If you still have questions, there is an informational email address: [email protected]. Click link below to see dates.
