Utah Ballots have come again, so here we go - Please VOTE! These slides will help guide you through the process.

The midterm elections MATTER — and not just nationally.

Your vote will help determine what can and will happen in Utah for the next two years (and beyond).

Utah ballots start arriving in our mailboxes next week. What will be on them? All Utah voters will have two proposed constitutional amendments on their ballots. Here’s the lowdown on one of them: Amendment B.

Amendment B would raise the threshold to 60% for certain ballot initiatives to pass. The big question is whether Amendment B is more about taxes or about limiting citizen-led ballot initiatives.

Supporters focus on the threshold for raising taxes. Opponents worry that, given the history of 60% thresholds (not to mention 2024’s Amendment D), Amendment B would undermine an important right guaranteed by Utah’s Constitution.

Utah Civics Project is nonpartisan, but nonpartisan doesn’t mean we stay silent on issues that affect how our government works. We take positions when we believe an issue has significant implications for our Constitution, the balance of governmental power, or Utah citizens’ ability to make their voices heard. That’s the lens through which we’re approaching Amendment B.

The U.S. Constitution assumes we will disagree. It builds checks and balances to channel that disagreement and keep it from becoming chaos.

In his book "The Constitution of Knowledge," Jonathan Rauch argues that our search for truth needs something similar. We need systems that allow us to challenge claims, check assumptions, correct our mistakes, and forge a productive path forward.

In an age of algorithms, tribalism, and endless information, protecting those systems may be more important than ever. Because in a democracy, seeking truth isn’t just an intellectual exercise. It’s a shared civic responsibility.

Every state does taxation differently. Utah uses three main types of taxes to fund education and other government services.

Here's a quick primer on income tax, sales tax, and property taxes—how much, how they're used in Utah, and a few fun facts. Some eagle friends joined us along the way.

Kinda chic to be civic-minded.

Remind your friends to register to vote, especially the young ones who move and change addresses a lot.

Shout out to Deidre M. Henderson for her courageous defense of voters' privacy, the law, and election integrity.

Do you know what's going on in your city? Truth and taxation is coming up. Maybe your city is talking about housing or traffic or public safety issues. Find out when city council meetings are and show up!

The primaries are over. Do you have candidates you're excited about? If so, find a way to contribute to their campaign.

The legialative session starts in January, but interim sessions happen throughout the year. Do you know what various committees are talking about? Do you know what laws are going into effect now?

What do you need for a voter prep party?
1. A sample ballot for your area -- check your county clerk's website
2. A group of friends or neighbors who can commit to civic dialogue about candidates and issues
3. Research -- either assign attendees something specific to research, or do the research yourself to share with everyone.
4. Treats are always a good incentive. 🍿🍨🥤
