GIVE BRITTA THE CHANCE TO COME HOME

Our sweet Britta is fighting through a serious bout of colic, and we are reaching out to our community for help. Britta is loved by so many, and right now, we want to give her the very best chance possible to recover.

Last night, Britta began showing signs of colic. I stayed up with her throughout the night, doing everything I could to keep her comfortable. After discussing her condition with the veterinary team, I made the difficult decision around 4:00 a.m. to take her to Oregon State University's Veterinary Hospital in Corvallis. We arrived a little after 6:00 a.m., where she underwent a full triage.

The veterinary team is working hard to determine what is causing her colic, how best to treat it, and how to address concerns in her bloodwork. She has also started passing diarrhea, and we are anxiously waiting to learn more about what this means for her recovery.

At this point, Britta may need to remain hospitalized for 3–5 days. The estimated cost ranges from $3,975 to $5,300, and in order to get her the care she needs at OSU, we had to put down a $4,000 retainer.

This is a significant and unexpected expense, and we are asking for help so we can focus on Britta's care and give her the best possible chance of coming through this.

We love fall and we love Spring said no Horse person ever! What do the changing seasons need to horse owners… More chance of colic! The more Horses you have the more chances somebody will decide to colic. Please send healing thoughts to Britta for some gut sounds and passing some gas. That's one thing Horse owners celebrate is when we hear gut sounds and farts!

We love our Fjord...Britta the beautiful!

🐴 THE NORWEGIAN FJORD HORSE — WHY DOES IT HAVE THAT EXTRAORDINARY TWO-TONED MANE?

With its adorable face, sturdy little body and unmistakable hairstyle, the Norwegian Fjord Horse is one of the most recognisable horse breeds in the world.

But that striking black-and-white mane isn't the result of clever grooming or artificial colouring. It's completely natural!

The secret lies in the breed's ancient genetics.

Originating in the mountainous fjord regions of western Norway, these hardy horses have been bred for centuries to work on farms, carry loads and navigate difficult terrain. Their ancestors were established in Norway long before modern horse breeds emerged.

One of their most distinctive features is their dun colouring, which produces a lighter body coat alongside darker markings.

These include a dark stripe running along the spine, sometimes faint zebra-like stripes on the legs, and that famous two-coloured mane.

The dark central section of the mane is called the "midtstol" in Norwegian. On either side grow much lighter hairs, often creamy white, creating the remarkable contrast.

Traditionally, owners trim the mane short so it stands upright, with the lighter outer hairs cut slightly shorter than the darker centre. This creates the characteristic curved crest and makes the natural colouring even more striking.

And here's something fascinating: not all Fjord Horses are the same golden colour!

The breed has five recognised dun shades: brown, red, grey, white and yellow dun, with brown dun being the most common.

Despite their relatively small size, Fjords are exceptionally strong, intelligent and versatile. Today they're enjoyed for riding, driving, trekking and therapeutic activities.

Their calm temperament, resilience and distinctive appearance have made them beloved far beyond their Norwegian homeland.

And those fluffy foals? With their soft coats, upright ears and wonderfully expressive faces, they're almost impossibly cute!
