Founded in 1939, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society, formerly the Upper Susquehanna Historical Society, strives to preserve the heritage of the Greater Oneonta area and to educate the population by offering programs which familiarize area citizens with local history. As an organization, we work to enhance the future by providing a tradition on which our contemporary culture can be based and out of which it can grow.

our newly renovated historic third-floor ballroom!
 
🎉 Join us on Friday, June 12, from 6-9pm, at the Oneonta History Center & Museum (183 Main Street), for an evening of celebration, featuring games and prizes, a cash bar, and complementary local eats from neighborhood restaurants and caterers, including Bella Michael’s Restaurant, the B-Side Ballroom, Hannaford, Social Eats Café, Sodexo Catering, and more.

💃 Cocktail attire is encouraged!

🏢 The Gala will introduce the ballroom space to our community and highlight its potential use for cultural programming and celebratory events. Come down and celebrate with us!!

📣📣 On Saturday, May 23, 2026, GOHS will open our next special exhibition, “Revolution! Local Lives in the Age of Independence” (May 23 – November 2026), commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary!

🎉 Join us for an Exhibition Opening Reception for “Revolution!” on Saturday, May 23, from 5-6:30pm at the Oneonta History Center & Museum (183 Main Street). Light hors d’oeuvres and beer and wine will be served. The reception is free and open to the public.

🇺🇸 On display in the Brzozowski Special Exhibition Gallery and Buckingham (Main Street) and SUNY Alumni (Dietz Street) Windows, the exhibition will explore some of the diverse men and women in our region that experienced, helped fight for, shaped, or were shaped by the American Revolution.

🙏🏻 “Revolution!” is made possible in part by a 2026 New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Support for Organizations Grant and an Otsego County 250 Commission Events Grant, in addition to other funders. The exhibit will remain on display through November 2026.

📣📣 Join us at the Oneonta History Center & Museum next Saturday, April 18, at 12pm for a Book Talk with local author and SUNY Professor, Dr. Mark Ferrara.

👨‍🏫 With 2025 marking the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal completion, Dr. Ferrara will discuss his new work, “The Raging Erie: Life & Labor Along the Erie Canal” (Columbia University Press, 2025), chronicling the lives of the poor and working classes along the canal.

🆓 The Book Talk will be held at the History Center (183 Main Street) on our the third-floor ballroom. This event is free and open to the public.

📝 While it is not required, we do request that you consider RSVP’ing by Friday, April 17, by email ([email protected]) or by phone (607-432-0960) to ensure adequate seating for all.

📣📣 Mark your calendar for our 19th Postcard, Book, & Ephemera Show & Sale, next Saturday, April 18 (10am-3:30pm)!

⛪️ This year’s Show & Sale will be held in the Social Room at Elm Park Methodist Church (401 Chestnut Street). Admission is free as is parking in the church lot.

📚 GOHS and more than a dozen additional vendors will have books, ephemera, and postcards for sale, including vintage Oneonta postcards. Among the ephemera offered, there will be vintage sports cards, stereo cards, postage stamps, magazines, posters, maps, art, and much more. There will also be a Silent Auction.

🖼️ At the show, there will be a rare opportunity to view two very special items on loan for the day. One is a quilt with a railroad theme made by Gilbertsville artist Alberta Hutchinson (1940-2021). The other is an original lithograph of Andersonville Prison by Thomas O’Dea (1848-1926), a Union solder in the Civil War who was a prisoner at Andersonville. The City of Oneonta is the longtime owner of this lithograph.

🧑‍🏫 Join us at the History Center (183 Main Street) this Thursday, April 2, at 6pm for a Student Presentation, in collaboration with SUNY Oneonta.

📔 Featuring the work of SUNY Oneonta students Abigail Draper, Sadie Hall, and Emma McCarthy, “The Arthur Curtis Diaries” presentation will highlight the diary transcriptions of Mathematics and Penmanship professor at the Oneonta Normal School, Arthur Curtis.

📝 SUNY Oneonta students will discuss their progress in transcribing these diaries, and the many ways they provide insight into Curtis’ personality and everyday life in turn-of-the-century Oneonta.

🆓 This event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and will be on a first-come-first-serve basis.

🇺🇸 Banners honoring past and current service members are displayed from Memorial Day (May 26, 2026) to Veterans Day (November 11, 2026) in the City and Town of Oneonta.

🗓️ The deadline for applications for NEW banners for the 2026 cycle is TOMORROW (THIS SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 2026)!! The deadline for applications for RENEWAL banners for the 2026 cycle is Saturday, MAY 9, 2026 (availability permitting).

⏳ Banner sponsors have the option of choosing their preferred location(s) for their banner(s). All banners (new and renewed) and their locations are on a first come first serve basis and spaces are limited, so be sure to renew your banner, or apply for a new banner, ASAP! Locations are filling up quickly!
