Founded in 1939, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society, formerly the Upper Susquehanna Historical Society, strives to preserve the heritage of the Greater Oneonta area and to educate the population by offering programs which familiarize area citizens with local history. As an organization, we work to enhance the future by providing a tradition on which our contemporary culture can be based and out of which it can grow.

📣📣 Join GOHS next Saturday, 10/17, as we partner with the Carbondale Historical Society & Museum (CHSM) for a collaborative event that will reconnect these two twin cities with each other, just like when the D&H Railroad, with its daily freight and passenger trains, used to connect Carbondale, PA and Oneonta, NY many years ago.

🚗 CHSM members will be making a day trip to the Oneonta History Center & Museum on Saturday, October 17 to see the Museum and various historical railroad sites in our city.

🏢 The visit will entail gathering at the History Center at 11am for greetings and discussion before heading down to Market Street for chance to tour the D&H station (formerly Stella Luna Ristorante) around 12:30pm.

🚂 Next, we will make our way across the tracks to Neahwa Park to step inside the A&S Red Caboose.

🍔 We will wrap the day with a late lunch at the Depot Restaurant & Tavern, once the U&D Train Depot, around 3pm.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 As you may know, Oneonta has a long history of some of our most recognized families relocating here from Carbondale, including the Cerras, Dragos, Ritchkos, Scorzafavas, Russos, Scavos, Giardinas, Vergaris, and more. If you have family members that used to work for the D&H or have family connections between Carbondale and Oneonta, we hope you will be able to join us!

📣📣 Join us TOMORROW, Saturday, October 10, at 2pm, as we partner with the Oneonta Branch of the NAACP to unveil a newly restored gravesite at the West Burlington Cemetery (2417 NY-80, Burlington Flats, NY).

🪦 The unveiling ceremony will be held at the site of the original gravestone and its new replica marker for York, a formerly enslaved person in Otsego County. York was born in Africa and won his freedom sometime during his life. As a free man, he owned property in Otsego County and lived as a respected member of his local Baptist Church and community until his death in 1807 at the age of 60.

🎤 The ceremony will include remarks from Oneonta NAACP Former President Lee Fisher, Community Foundation of Otsego County (CFOC) Executive Director Jeff Katz, and other special guests.

🙏🏻 This gravesite restoration project was funded by the Oneonta NAACP, with the help of an Otsego County Cemetery Restoration Fund (FOI) grant from the Community Foundation of Otsego County. The Oneonta NAACP gives special thanks to Cherry Valley Memorials for creating the replica gravestone, and Alpine Engraving for engraving the commemorative plaque that accompanies it.

🍝 GOHS will hold our Annual Dinner & Meeting on Wednesday, October 14, from 5:30pm – 8:00pm (doors at 5pm) at Toscana Northern Italian Grill (76 Chestnut Street, Oneonta).

🎟️ Tickets for the dinner are available for $60 for GOHS members and $65 for non-GOHS members, and will include tabled appetizers, a plated salad, a choice of an entrée, dessert, and soda and/or coffee. One complimentary house b**r or red or white w**e will also be included in the ticket price. A cash bar will be available for additional b**r, w**e, and cocktails.

🎉 This event is open to the public and is a wonderful way to show your support for GOHS, our history, and one of Oneonta’s most treasured local restaurants.

📝 The Annual Dinner also doubles as GOHS’s Annual Meeting. The meeting will be brief and will include voting on new trustees and officers for GOHS’s Board, and the awarding of the 2026 Eduard Hofbauer Outstanding Service Award, Albert E. Morris Award, and John M. Pontius Award.

📣📣 THIS FRIDAY, September 4, at 10:30am, join GOHS and SUNY Oneonta in celebrating Founder’s Day with the unveiling of our final NYS Historical Marker of the 2026 season for Old Main!

🪧 The Old Main historic marker commemorates the former site of Old Main, established in 1889 and razed in 1977. The building was the original site of SUNY Oneonta. **The marker will be located at the foot of Maple Street at the intersection of State Street (now the Old Main Apartments, 7 State Street) where the original steps to the Old Main building still remain.

🎉 Prior to the unveiling, GOHS, SUNY Oneonta staff, and the Alumni Association will gather across the street at Maple Street Park for light refreshments and remarks from SUNY Oneonta President Dr. Alberto Cardelle, City Mayor Dan Butterman, and more.

🙏🏻 The Old Main historic marker is generously funded by the SUNY Oneonta Alumni Association.

🆓 This event is free and open to the press and public.

📣📣 Join GOHS THIS SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, at 11am, for the unveiling of the Oneonta Fairgrounds NYS historical marker and Fairgrounds Historic Walking Tour!

🪧 The Oneonta Fairgrounds historical marker commemorates the site of the Central NY Fair from 1873 to 1927 and its racetrack (now Belmont Circle). This marker is funded by the Future for Oneonta Foundation (FOF) and generous donors. ***The marker will stand on the corner near the roadside at the top of Fair Street, where North and South Belmont Circle meet.

🚶🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ And be sure to stick around immediately following the unveiling for a Walking Tour of the Oneonta Fairgrounds, led by GOHS Librarian Wayne Wright!! The tour will leave from the location of the historic marker.

🆓 This event is free and open to the press and public. The Walking Tour is by donation and reservations are not required.
👏🏻 GOHS thanks the City of Oneonta and their Department of Public Works for their support and FOF for helping to preserve Oneonta’s rich history.
