Across New York, farmland will continue to change hands. With the average age of our farm owner at 57, a generation is in the process of aging out. Given the recent trends, there’s a real risk these farms may be sold off or left to idle.

For many farm owners, the question of what comes next is not only financial, but deeply personal. It’s about stewardship, legacy, and whether the land they’ve tended for will continue to be cared for into the future.

At the same time, an incoming generation of farmers need secure, affordable land access. They’re ready to feed their communities, build businesses, and put down roots, but face the barriers of the high cost of land and high interest rates.

These two realities, while closely connected, don’t always meet face to face.

Our Land Access Program is working to change that. We know successful farmland transitions mean working with both sides: helping landowners navigate succession planning with clarity and confidence, while also supporting farm seekers with equitable access and long-term viability.

When transitions are done well, farmland stays in farming, production continues, and communities remain connected to the land that feeds them.

Through our Land Access Program, CADE works to help bridge the gap between aspiring farmers with landowners, sharing opportunities (specifically in Delaware, Schoharie and Otsego counties) while supporting careful transition planning to ensure a resilient food system into the future.

Terra Viva (formerly Aldo's) Farm is a privately-held property in Schoharie County, NY. The owners are seeking experienced farmer(s) to establish a business that works well alongside their own aspirations for a cattle herd on the land. There is newly-renovated rental housing available onsite. Farm owners are open to different models of collaborating with the incoming farmer(s).

For livestock/poultry farmers looking to start or relocate in the Mohawk Valley, this is a chance to share a large land parcel with on-site infrastructure and collaborative co-occupants.

Check out details on their NY Farmland Finder listing (search Aldo's farm), and reach out to our Land Access Program Manager to explore potential fit.

Kate Marsiglio of in Delaware County, NY is working to build a farm operation rooted in care: for the land, the animals, and the community it feeds. Growing a multi-function farm, hospitality, and education organization comes with real challenges, but with supporters including CADE, Kate has been able to strengthen her approach and grow Stony Creek into a beloved part of the Walton community.

We at CADE have two new team members we'd like to introduce to you.

After the better part of a decade in value-based sourcing and operations—across culinary events, retail, food service, and wholesale organizations—Sofia Degtyar is now weaving relationships across the New York agricultural value chain to support producers in accessing new markets. Sofia has led the procurement department at GrowNYC’s New York Regional Food Hub in the Bronx, oversaw sourcing and operations for an aggregate CSA delivery program as well as a brick and mortar market & cafe at Local Roots in Brooklyn, developed programming to support beginning and immigrant farmers with expanding their wholesale operations, and consulted mission-aligned food businesses on strategy and marketing.

Jared Spears is a writer and communications manager inhabiting the Mahicannituck/ Hudson River Valley since 2021. As Engagement Manager for CADE's Creative Media & Learning Content, he is responsible for outward facing digital and multi-media communications. Jared previously served in a communications role at the Schumacher Center in the Berkshires, contributing to the non-profit’s digital publications and helping to further place-based development initiatives including the BerkShares local currency as well as the Berkshire Community Land Trust’s Farmsteads for Farmers land access campaign.

Farmland across New York is at a turning point. Land is going idle while upcoming farmers are looking for places to grow.

As climate pressure rises and food systems strain, local land holds new meaning—and new opportunity to step up.

If you own farmland, this is an invitation: to see it not just as property, but as part of a living system to which you belong.

CADE can help you connect with farmers through Farmland Finder, and explore what’s possible for your land. https://www.cadefarms.org/landownership

Serkan of had been raising livestock for seventeen years — a "blessed" lifestyle in his view. Building out a Halal meat processing facility in central New York, however, was riddled with challenges. With help from CADE, Cambudak's team was able to navigate the complexities to a USDA-certified plant, greatly expanding operational capacity. A key part of the mutual success, as he explains, was about navigating local relationships.

Spring has been bustling for CADE Program staff. At the 44th Annual Winter Conference, held at , CADE's Tanya Moyer presented on Marketing Paths for Meat Producers. Participants learned about the range of potential options for those raising livestock: direct to consumer via farmers markets, CSAs, on-farm stores, and small-scale wholesale opportunities such as working with retailers, restaurants, and distributors.

Outlining the benefits and challenges of each model, Tanya emphasizes practical insights to help guide farmers on which path(s) align best with their production model and capacity, customer base, long term business goals, and personal priorities concerning time, lifestyle, and community.

Kate M. of started with a vision for organic farming and dairy — stewarding land, animals, and community in close relation. At CADE, she says, she was met by people who truly understood that vision. Amid a landscape of institutional support, CADE “got” what they were trying to create. That kind of alignment can change what’s possible for a local farm to find their footing.
