Today marks 25 years since September 11, 2001.

We remember the 2,977 lives taken that day, including 343 FDNY firefighters who answered the call and never returned home. We honor the police officers, paramedics, EMTs, dispatchers, military personnel, construction workers, volunteers, and countless others who responded in the hours, months, and years that followed.

We also remember those who have since lost their lives to illnesses caused by their service at Ground Zero. Their sacrifice continues, and so must our commitment to care for them and their families.

Twenty-five years have passed, but we have not forgotten their courage, their service, or the families and communities forever changed by that day.

Never forget. Always remember.

Labor Day is more than a long weekend. It honors the working people who built our communities and the labor movement that fought for safer workplaces, fair wages, reasonable hours, and a voice on the job.

Ocean Shores Professional Firefighters Local 2109 is proud to serve this community, and proud to stand together for the safety and working conditions our members deserve.

Because when firefighters have a voice, the community is stronger and safer.

Ocean Shores Firefighters IAFF Local 2109 supports bringing the South Station into service. Our members want this project to succeed, and we believe the community deserves an accurate account of where things stand.

The Union was not consulted during the planning, construction, or renovation of the station, nor were we approached to review conditions or raise concerns before it was presented as ready. Instead, our members had to independently identify and document significant safety and compliance concerns and bring them forward to the City.

These safety concerns include the electrical issues referenced in the City’s recent update, as well as mold, air quality concerns, fire safety, access and egress, health and sanitation, and security issues.
We provided documentation of these issues to the City in writing on July 20 (before the July 23 grand opening). The City chose to proceed with the ceremony despite those concerns not being resolved.

Unfortunately, staffed operations did not begin that day and the South Station has not been staffed since then.

Our focus remains on completing the necessary work so that we can better serve our community. We appreciate the progress being made and look forward to celebrating when we can have firefighters safely operating out of the South Station.

IAFF Local 2109 represents the professional firefighters of Ocean Shores. Our members provide emergency medical services (including advanced life support), ambulance transport, and fire/rescue services to the community.

It is with profound sadness that Ocean Shores Professional Firefighters Local 2109 joins our brothers and sisters of Lacey Professional Fire Fighters Local 2903 in mourning the loss of Firefighter Jake Johnson.

Our thoughts are with Jake’s family, friends, the members of Lacey Fire District 3, and Lacey Professional Firefighters during this incredibly difficult time. We stand beside our brothers and sisters and offer our heartfelt condolences and unwavering support.

Rest easy, Brother. You will not be forgotten.

With heavy hearts, Lacey Fire District 3 mourns the loss of Firefighter Jake Johnson.
 
Jake was a firefighter, a teammate, and a friend who answered the call to serve others with courage and compassion. His loss is felt deeply by everyone who knew him and served alongside him.
 
Over the past several days, we have witnessed an extraordinary outpouring of love and support from our community and from people far beyond it. The prayers, messages of hope, and countless acts of kindness shared on Jake’s behalf have been a powerful reminder of the impact he had on those around him and the strength of the fire service family and the communities we serve.
 
We extend our deepest gratitude to the responding crews from Olympia and Tumwater Fire Departments, and the teams at Providence St. Peter Hospital and Harborview Medical Center who cared for Jake throughout this journey. These dedicated professionals provided extraordinary skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment. The care and kindness they showed Jake and his family will never be forgotten.
 
Our hearts are with Jake’s family, his loved ones, his friends, and everyone grieving this unimaginable loss. We ask that you continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers and respect their privacy in the days ahead.

Jake, you will always be remembered as a firefighter, a teammate, and a friend. Our Lacey Fire family will carry you with us.
