Tickets in bio or at door!

Willie McLellan has performed as a violist in Chicago for the last decade. He is an experienced orchestral musician, having played with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and Camerata Chicago. Willie also greatly enjoys playing chamber music. He was a member of the Chicago Symphony’s MusiCorps outreach program, which educated and performed for audiences in schools and parks. In 2019, he co-founded the Kolmar Music Collective, a mixed ensemble that performs works of diverse and underrepresented composers. In the summer of 2021, he was a featured performer in a string quartet at the American Suzuki Institute in Stevens Point.

Willie has a performance degree from UW-Madison in violin. He studied viola performance at DePaul University and Northern Illinois University, where he was a teaching assistant to Tony Devroye. He currently maintains his own private studio of violinists and violists at Musette Strings, a music school he co-founded in 2023.

When he is not busy on the music scene, Willie enjoys experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, finding interesting hiking spots, and improving his swimming at park district pools.

Cellist ALEXA MUHLY holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Her major teachers include Aldo Parisot and Alan Harris. She has performed extensively in the United States, Canada, England, France, Germany, Hungary, and Lithuania, and is an active orchestral and chamber musician in the Chicago area. In recent seasons, she was the principal cellist of the Kalamazoo Symphony, and also appeared with the Grand Rapids Symphony and the Pine Mountain Music Festival. Ms. Muhly received early recognition as a first-prize winner in the Iowa Center for the Arts competition, as well as a prize winner in the Jugend Musiziert national competition in Germany…full artist bio of Alexa Muhly in the comment.

Join us for an evening of experimental sound, improvisation, and spatial listening with Matt Robidoux, Coppice, and NNN Cook!

Bios:
Matt Robidoux (they/he) is a San Francisco based composer, improviser, and educator interested in the convergence of movement and sound as it relates to free improvisation and accessibility. Their primary instrument is the “corn synth” (Kinetically Operated Randomness Network) a modular system that interprets physical input from two “ears of corn” sculptures cast in aluminum.

They are part of a composer collective with Sally Decker, Brendan Glasson, Briana Marela, Michelle Moeller, and Mitch Stahlmann, and Flatways, an electroacoustic improvising trio with Jordan Glenn and Sudhu Tewari. They have worked with Creativity Explored, Del Sol Quartet, Fred Frith, Eclipse Quartet, William Winant, Jaap Blonk, Laura Steenberge, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Anla Courtis, and J Mascis.

Coppice
For over 15 years, the Chicago-based duo Coppice (Noé Cuéllar and Joseph Kramer) has created experimental music centered on auditory pairings. Its compositions often address recursive relations between presentation and representation, framing and reframing, object specificity and technological imprint.

Currently, Coppice is exploring the timbres, tones, and shapes of idiophones (a kind of musical instrument whose own substance vibrates to produce sound), and strategies in spatial audio.

Coppice’s previous experiments include Bellows & Electronics (2009–2014), Physical Modeling & Modular Syntheses (2014–2018), and Phonography & Fiction (2018–2022). These musical trajectories and their respective instruments and devices are documented online, along with writings on creative processes, including retrospective works published by Leonardo and Seismograf. NNN Cook
Interdisciplinary visual/sound artist, poet, and designer NNN Cook runs the experimental cassette label Close/Far Recordings and is the creator and curator of the St. Louis-based music, video, and… full artist bio in the comment.

BIO:

The Fancies walked into a 7-11. It had been a long night. Death (not THAT Death!) stumbled into the same 7-11.

Yo, said The Fancies.

Yo, said Death.

And the rest was history.

As a kindergartner in the 1980s Sam Ramos was signed up for karate by his parents. He quit after the first day because he didn’t like taking his shoes off in front of strangers. It is a moment he has never overcome. Sam is a writer, museum guy, father, spouse…and musician? He grew up in Austin but considers Chicago his home even though he lives in Berwyn.

As an elementary school kid in the 1980s Michael Green’s mom signed him up for judo classes. After he was dropped off, he waited for his mom to leave and then he climbed out through the window of the community center and ran away. He never went back and has mostly stuck with the arts since, currently working as a Creative Director with the Chicago Humanities Festival.

Since being discovered in the woods, Ryan Thompson has grown more accustomed to our modern human ways. He still sleeps on the floor and catches his own food. What you don’t know is that he made work about cryptids years ago. https://departmentofnaturalhistory.com/Burden-of-Proof
