First Step Back Home

First Step Back Home Caring for the homeless and working poor.in St. Charles County, MO and surrounding areas. Charles County.

Our History

In 2000, Paul and Lana established a ministry to serve over-the-road truckers in Foristell, MO at the TA Truck Stop on Highway 70. This Trucker Church Ministry still exists today, and has now provided Christian services to more than 4,700 truckers. During Paul’s early involvement with the Trucker Church Ministry, he became aware of the lack of resources and gaps in service by local so

cial service providers for the homeless in St. In the winter of 2005 he began researching the homeless problem, became involved with the St. Charles County Continuum of Care group, and started to consider what he could personally do to meet the needs of homeless who were coming to him for help during Trucker Church services. In March 2005, Paul founded the First Step Back Home (FSBH) Homeless Ministry, spawned by a $1,000 gift from a local business that helped cover outlays he had been personally making to assist the homeless. FSBH was established as a qualified 501(c)(3) public charity in February, 2007. In 2009, Paul retired from his home repair business of 18 years to focus all of his attention on what he considered to be a serious local homeless problem. By the grace of God and the glory of the Gospel, FSBH has assisted more than 5,000 homeless in the local area to date in getting lodging, food, clothing, jobs, and transportation, in their quest to become self-supporting. FSBH now assists many of the homeless, usually referred by the Salvation Army, Crider Health Center and other social service agencies, churches, hospitals, police departments, individuals, local businesses and government.

We always try to service our homeless veteran clients. FSBH was founded by a Navy Vietnam Veteran and he has a heart especially for those guys!

Did you know that 20% of the male homeless population are veterans? While substantial progress has been made in reducing veteran homelessness over the past two decades, many veterans continue to face barriers related to housing and reintegration into civilian life.

In addition to the broader causes of homelessness affecting many Americans, some veterans face service-related challenges that increase their vulnerability – for example, 51% of homeless veterans have disabilities.

For many veterans, stable housing is the foundation needed to address healthcare, employment, recovery, and long-term stability. The Care Service Street Outreach team has had the privilege of walking alongside veterans experiencing homelessness in our community and working to get them housed. We are grateful for their service and are honored to play a small part in building the community support system for them.

And THANK YOU too especially to our FSBH supporters who knocked it out of the park for us and got every one of the 10 matches totalling $21,500 fulfilled!

St. Louis, thank you.

In a time where so many nonprofits are being asked to do more with less, this year’s Give STL Day reminded us of something powerful: this community still shows up.

To every nonprofit serving our region day in and day out, thank you for the work you do behind the scenes and on the front lines. And to every donor, advocate, volunteer, sponsor, and supporter who gave, shared, encouraged, and believed in this day… thank you for proving once again what’s possible when a community comes together.

The 13th annual Give STL Day raised $3.6 million for local nonprofits across the St. Louis region. That impact will ripple far beyond today.

St. Louis, this is what generosity looks like.

Today’s the BIG Day - Give STL Day in full swing! Please remember our cause, as funds are greatly needed to lodge homeless folks who call daily in need of a safe place to sleep and take a shower and regroup. Did you know there’s NO SHELTERS in St. Charles County for them to “walk-in”- so we use local motels and it costs $65-90/night.

At this point we’re in first place for dollars raised by a micro charity. Help us keep up the momentum: www.GiveSTLDay.org/firststepbackhome
