20 YEARS LATER — WE REMEMBER EMILY KEYES

Twenty years ago today, September 27, 2006, the unimaginable happened at Platte Canyon High School in Bailey, Colorado.

A 16-year-old student named Emily Keyes lost her life.

In the final moments of an event that would forever change her family, her school, and communities across Colorado, Emily sent a simple message to her family:

“I love u guys.”

Four words.

Four words that came from a daughter to her family. Four words that would become a mission. Four words that would ultimately help change school safety across Colorado and throughout our nation.

As President of the Colorado Association of School Resource Officers (CASRO), I have seen firsthand how the work of The “I Love U Guys” Foundation has influenced the way schools, law enforcement, fire departments, emergency responders, educators, students, and families prepare for and respond to emergencies.

The Keyes family took the darkest moment imaginable and chose to serve others.

From the Standard Response Protocol to the Standard Reunification Method, their work has helped create common language and stronger partnerships between schools and first responders. Their mission has helped communities prepare for moments we all hope will never come.
For those of us who serve in schools, Emily's story is more than history.

It is a responsibility.

A responsibility to train.
A responsibility to prepare.
A responsibility to build relationships before a crisis occurs.
A responsibility to protect our students and educators.
And a responsibility to never become complacent when it comes to school safety.

To the Keyes family: Colorado's School Resource Officers stand with you today. We remember Emily with you. We honor the incredible strength your family has demonstrated over these past 20 years, and we thank you for turning Emily's words into a legacy that continues to protect students across this country.
Emily Keyes will always be remembered as more than a name associated with a tragedy.

She is a daughter. A student. A young woman whose four simple words became a movement.

Twenty years later, her message still guides us.

“I love u guys.” ❤️

We remember Emily.
We honor her family.
We continue the mission.

Welcome back to school EPC!!!!

🚌 School Is Back in Session – Slow Down and Stay Alert 🚸

As students across Colorado return to the classroom, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office reminds everyone to use extra caution in and around school zones.

Children may be walking, riding bikes, or getting on and off school buses, and they don't always recognize traffic hazards. A few extra seconds of patience can prevent a tragedy.

Remember to:
🚸 Slow down and obey all posted school zone speed limits.
🛑 Stop for school buses when required by Colorado law.
📵 Put your phone away and eliminate distractions.
🚶 Watch carefully for children crossing streets, especially near crosswalks and intersections.
🚗 Be patient during busy drop-off and pick-up times.
🎒 Give yourself extra travel time to avoid rushing through school zones.

Every child deserves to arrive at school safely and return home to their family at the end of the day.

Let's work together to make this school year a safe one for every student, parent, crossing guard, bus driver, and member of our community.

A great reminder from Frederick Police Department!!!

As the school year begins, we can all play a role in making sure students get to and from school safely. Whether you drive, walk, bike, or help a student get ready, staying alert helps keep everyone safe.

𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀:
- Drive slowly and watch for students who are walking or biking in school zones, neighborhoods, and near bus stops.
- Always stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing, and the stop arm is out.
- Look out for people walking or biking, especially at crosswalks, intersections, bike lanes, and school entrances.
- When passing someone on a bicycle, slow down and give them plenty of space.
- Stay focused on the road and avoid distractions, especially during busy drop-off and pick-up times.

𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀:
- Talk to students about road safety. Remind them to look both ways and make sure drivers see them before crossing the street.
- Check that bikes are in good shape and helmets fit well before students ride.
- Encourage students to use sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, and school crossings whenever they can.
- Go over walking, biking, and bus routes with younger students before school starts.

𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
- Stay alert by putting away phones and other distractions while walking or biking.
- Listen to crossing guards and wait for their signal before crossing the street.
- Always wear a helmet that fits well when riding a bike or scooter.
- Ride safely by following traffic signs and signals, riding in a straight line, and watching for cars at intersections and driveways.
- Make sure drivers can see you, especially in the early morning or when it is hard to see.

Keeping our school year safe is a team effort. Please slow down, stay alert, and watch out for Frederick’s students, no matter how they get to school.
