At the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO), employees across the hospitals submitted 128 ideas designed to improve patient care and hospital efficiency as part of HMO’s Year of Innovation.

From a specialized wheelchair that keeps mothers and newborns together, to smarter emergency department systems and AI-powered post-procedure care coordination, these ideas show what happens when the people closest to the challenges are empowered to create solutions.

And 42% of the submissions came from administrative staff — proof that innovation can come from every corner of a hospital.

The Hadassah Medical Organization has once again been named by Newsweek among the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027, earning global recognition in oncology, cardiology and, for the first time, cardiac surgery.

This marks the seventh consecutive year Hadassah has been recognized for cardiology and the sixth consecutive year for oncology.

Dr. Diekramabo Ikenna Aguwuom dreamed of becoming a spine surgeon. Her journey took her from Rivers State, Nigeria, to the Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) — and ultimately back home with a mission to transform spine care for Nigerian patients.
As the first female orthopedic surgeon in Rivers State, Dr. Aguwuom already had an extraordinary record. But during a 2018 trauma fellowship at Hadassah, a chance encounter in the spine operating room with Dr. Joshua Schroeder, director of spine surgery, opened the door to something more.

Years later, that dream became reality when she returned to HMO in 2025 for a long-term fellowship in the Spine Unit.

“The Hadassah fellowship was a lifechanging experience for me,” she says.
Now, she’s bringing what she learned back to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital — with a goal of helping Nigerian patients receive quality spine care at home, rather than having to travel abroad for treatment.

From one operating room to a dream realized, Dr. Aguwuom’s story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when opportunity meets determination.

“You can have a dream, but sometimes when it becomes a reality, it is bigger than you imagined.”
