Well On Their Way Improving the health of mothers and babies in northern Uganda through medical capacity building

Games are abundant in the US, and we take them for granted. Last year WOtW left behind a pack of UNO cards, and Paul and Stewart LOVED Uno so much, that they played it until every card fell apart. This year, we brought them a new Uno game. Look at the smiles on their faces and see what they have to say about why they love Uno!

WOtW babies!!

Meet Ruth and Tabitha. Ruth came to ultrasound training every day with her mother Midwife Adokorach Joyce and Tabitha came with her mother Midwife Anying Jane. Breastfeeding babies come to work with their mothers until they are weaned. A babysitter joins them as well, although Tabitha and Ruth had a lot of arms willing to hold them during the WOtW training!

We have enjoyed having babies at our trainings for years and seeing them grow up over time. Some are now ten years old!

OVER 100 obstetric Point of Care Ultrasounds have been done since the WOtW training team left a month ago. Here is what Apiyo Susan, one of the trained midwives says about her experience: "Amazing experience I have achieved through using ultrasound... is to know fetal gestational age...and most importantly fetal presentation...that makes me feel so confident when scanning!"

Shades of Grey: Ultrasound Training in Uganda, by Amy Sheible.

At first, ultrasound is just… shades of gray. But with training, those images start to tell real stories, helping midwives understand how far along a pregnancy is and even catch life-threatening complications early.

It’s already making a difference in real time, and it’s pretty incredible to see.

Ending social injustice requires determined action from everyone.

Here are 3 things you can do to help:

1. Speak up against all forms of discrimination
2. Support community organizations that provide essential services like food, supportive housing & job training
3. Engage in climate action

A reflection by Emily Atimango, a midwife in Gulu District Uganda who participated in the obstetric Point of Care Ultrasound training on using the device after months of online training:

"I had a hard time relating to the online training due to little knowledge. But when the trainers came around it was more or less the best moment for me because it felt like my mind was opened with just a click or like a radio station was tuned to a proper channel."

Ten days of Obstetric Point of Care Ultrasound Training to midwives in northern Uganda was remarkable, but success is dependent on follow up. WOtW is very grateful for the involvement of Drs. Joshua Wacha and JJ Lapat, Gulu City gynecologists who are generously giving their time and expertise to provide ongoing support to the midwife trainees. Joshua also took us on a beautiful bike ride (although Ann had to turn around early because of a flat tire!)
