North Andover Historical Society We seek, save, and share North Andover’s history. We also operate the S.

The North Andover Historical Society was founded in 1913 and is dedicated to preserving our local heritage and bringing it to life through children’s programs, guided tours, lectures, workshops, exhibits, craft demonstrations, architectural walking tours and publications. Our historic properties include Johnson Cottage (1789), the Parson Barnard House (1715) and the Hay Scales Building (1833). Forbes Rockwell Library and Archive at the Society Headquarters which contains thousands of documents, books, photographs, and paper objects that tell the story of the town and it’s people. We offer memberships and other ways to donate to support us, so check out how you can contribute to the preservation of our community!

On Wednesday evening, we were proud to host the North Andover Public Schools annual Celebrating Teachers event in the Worden Theater! Congratulations to this year’s NAPS Educator Hall of Fame Recipient, Nancy Jukins!

Such powerful stories showing Nancy’s lasting contribution to our students’ education, and her ability to inspire others to follow in her footsteps.

Many thanks to Preservation Massachusetts, their generous grant allowed us to fund the restoration of the windows at the Parson Barnard barn.

Cato was born into slavery on May 26, 1768 as his parents, Salem and Ramah, were enslaved by Rev. Samuel Phillips. During Cato’s lifetime, Massachusetts would declare slavery illegal. Following this legal ruling to comply with the new state constitution, in 1789 at the age of 21, Cato would take the last name of “Freeman” for himself and establish his own household, marrying Lydia Bistrow in the same year. They would go on to have at least nine children. Cato leased a farm from Henry Osgood and would eventually own his own land near Mill Pond. He was an active member of the North Parish Church and is noted for his contribution of playing his viol (a stringed instrument played with a bow), a skill he learned in childhood along with reading and writing. Despite slavery being illegal, Cato and other people of color in North Andover still faced many challenges. Check in next week to learn more!.
