Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for the hard launch of the NAACP Norristown Branch’s “Mindfulness Matters” Initiative. The evening was powerful, eye-opening, compassionate, and deeply needed within our community. With this initiative, we will have quarterly meetings on mental health awareness.
A very special thank you to our amazing guest speaker, Pastor Carolyn Mauras, for leading such an important conversation surrounding mental health awareness, healing, trauma, addiction recovery, compassion, and emotional wellness. Through both education and personal testimony, she helped break down stigmas that too often exist within communities of color surrounding mental health and seeking help.
One of the most impactful parts of the discussion was recognizing the inequities that still exist in mental health care and treatment — including how Black individuals are sometimes perceived, labeled, or treated differently when seeking help during moments of emotional distress or crisis. We also discussed the importance of understanding, recognizing, and compassionately supporting those who may be struggling silently around us.
Mental health matters. Healing matters. Compassion matters. Community matters.
And although May is Mental Health Awareness Month, mental health awareness does not stop when May ends. These conversations must continue year-round so our communities can heal, grow, support one another, and thrive together.
Thank you again to everyone who attended, participated, shared, listened, and helped make this launch meaningful. This is only the beginning.
