Happy World Ocean Day! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’™

Did you know that the MidCoast Watersheds include the basins of the Salmon, Siletz, Yaquina, Alsea, and Yachats rivers, as well as 28 smaller ocean tributaries? The forests, wetlands, and riparian ecosystems unique to our area provide cool, clean water, which is critical habitat for fish and wildlife. When intact, these ecosystems support keystone species of Pacific salmon that have long been the backbone of the culture and economy or the Pacific Northwest.

To celebrate World Ocean Day, we encourage you to get involved in the local events that we and our partners are hosting this month! https://aquarium.org/visit/calendar/world-ocean-day/

This fantastic event is tomorrow!

This fantastic event is tomorrow!

The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians invite the community to an afternoon of shared learning and conversation focused on the cultural, historical, and contemporary significance of the Tribeโ€™s relationship with the ocean and honoring the whale.

Reconnecting rivers and rebuilding estuaries is helping salmon recover! ๐Ÿž๏ธ

๐Ÿชต๐Ÿชพ In 2025, MidCoast improved 1.26 stream miles for coho habitat, and placed over 700 logs at restoration sites to slow down water and provide cover for juvenile fish!

We took advantage of the lowest tides of the year this month to help one of our favorite keystone species, the Sunflower Sea Star! โญ๏ธ๐ŸŒŠ

โ˜€๏ธ MidCoast teamed up with the Oregon Coast Aquarium to support the Oregon Kelp Allianceโ€™s ongoing Sunflower Sea Star recovery efforts through a newly developed community science training program!

๐ŸŒŸ Volunteers from MidCoast and Seven Capes Bird Alliance learned how to conduct beach surveys during low tide to monitor for Sunflower Sea Stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides)!

๐Ÿฆ€ Although we didnโ€™t spot any, we saw lots of other wonderful intertidal species, like a lemon dorid and a kelp crab! And, a 0-Sunflower Sea Star observation is still important data!

๐Ÿ’™ Thanks to all for your contributions to vital marine conservation work in our watersheds! ๐ŸŒŽ

๐Ÿฆ† We had a lot of fun partnering with Seven Capes Bird Alliance for two bird walks in early May! One bird walk was at the Cutler City Wetlands and Siletz Bay, and the other was at Eckman Lake and Slough!

๐Ÿ’™ Big thanks to all the folks that joined us!
