We have a feels like temp of 90 degrees here today. In the second week of October. In Michigan. Summer came storming back in for the past 2 days with its heat like it wasn’t done with whatever argument it was having with us.

The burros all love the heat but most of the rest of the herd was enjoying the cooler fall-like temps. Soak it up while you can!

This fall weather could not be more perfect 😍 I’ve been tidying up the inside of the barn to prep for winter. All the training pens were taken down and stored. Fans all shut down. Extra water troughs emptied and put away. Heated hose located and prepped for use. Are you ready for winter or hoping the warmer temps stick around?

Enjoy this lovely photo of some of our mustangs (L to R - Dolly, Chai, Jolene, Sage, Oakley), a half mustang (far right - Poppy), and a tiny pretend mustang (far left - Muffin) 🤭

Jolene and Chai stopping in to say hi on the first day of Fall 🍁 Temps are dropping, the air is crisp in the morning, but most importantly, the flies are dying 🤭

The gangs all here! It’s very rare that I’m able to get all the rescue horses and burros in one photo but I managed it today! I had to put out a fresh hay bale, lift up and stand on the forks of our tractor, and zoom out a bunch, but I did it 😆

Fun fact: The animals in our care range in ages from 2yo to upper 20’s! You probably wouldn’t know it by the looks of these guys. Age shouldn’t mean lack of body condition.

What a gorgeous morning! After yesterday’s pop up showers, we welcomed the cool air that followed. We were in the ‘air you can wear’ humidity range 🥵 slowly but surely creeping toward Fall means we will have our crocheted horse hats available soon! Keep an eye out for a post on how you can get one for your favorite equine friend!

Even though the grass is still plentiful, these chow hounds all still love just hanging at one of the hay feeders. Summer is quickly winding down. We are soaking up every minute of it.

The burros are always supervising. Gotta make sure I’m keeping the place up to their standards. Even leading me out to where they think I should spread the compost. They really bring such different personalities to the farm.

I really have to watch my pockets around Poppy! 🥕 This goofy girl has gone from totally independent to being the resident treat-thief. While she's still working on her 'stranger danger', her daily progress is a reminder of why we do this. She’s looking for her forever herd, someone who doesn't mind a little pocket-picking in exchange for a whole lot of heart. ❤️ Who else has a 'treat motivated' horse at home?

The world lost a legend yesterday, that’s no doubt. Our girl, Dolly, came with the name, but we kept it in honor of Dolly Parton. And we also named another mare she came in with Jolene.

As true icon of beauty and grace, the name couldn’t fit any better for our girl.

She may be gone, but she will not soon be forgotten. Rest peacefully, Dolly Parton.

I’m pretty sure Oakley is holding a slight grudge against me for allowing the vet to touch her a few weeks ago. It took a long time to earn her trust enough for me to be able to handle her when needed. I’m sure she had a few words for me as she was hanging out inside while her sedation wore off that day. Im just so grateful we were able to get her checked out and cleared to remain our herd matriarch ❤️
