The Ozzy Orange Program

10/12/2026

The Wildlife Center at Legends Ranch has an incredible hunter education program, and we’re grateful to have been a small part of it!

Thank you for having us and for all you do to educate the next generation of hunters. 🧡

The lesson doesn’t end when the class does.

We’re happy to be part of this youth giveaway. Congrats to the lucky winners! 🧡

Prayers going out to this man and his family that he pulls through. Please, always know what’s beyond your target even during target practice.

As one of the founders of the Ozzy Orange Program, I think it’s important to share this side of hunting, too. 🧡

We started Ozzy Orange because we love hunting—and because we know how important it is that everyone who heads into the field comes home safely.

We’ll always talk about safety here, but we’ll celebrate hunting, too. 🦌🧡

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life in this tragedy.

Hunting accidents like this are incredibly rare, but they still happen. This is a heartbreaking reminder of one of the most fundamental rules of fi***rm and hunter safety: positively identify your target and know what is beyond it before you ever pull the trigger.

No person should lose their life because they were mistaken for game. This is why we believe continuing the conversation about hunter safety matters — and why these lessons can never become routine or be taken for granted.

A Maryland man who was hunting in Delaware shot and killed a woman after mistaking her for a deer, Delaware State Police said.

🧡 A Donation With a Special Meaning

As we continue putting together the prize packages for our 2026 Michigan Outdoors Report Youth Hunt Giveaway, we received a donation that carries a little more meaning than most.

These two hunter-orange “Ozzy” hats were donated by the family behind the Ozzy Orange Program in memory of Austin “Ozzy” Yancey, who tragically lost his life in a hunting accident at just 12 years old.

Austin's family has taken an unimaginable loss and found a way to honor his memory by encouraging something every hunter should take seriously: hunter safety.

Their message is simple but incredibly important — positively identify your target, know what is beyond it, wear your hunter orange, and make sure everyone comes home safely.

One Ozzy Orange hat will be included in each of our two youth hunt winners' prize packages, along with a card sharing a little about Austin and the meaning behind the hat.

The family behind Ozzy Orange is still in the early stages of determining where this journey will take them, so we're going to respect their wishes and allow them to tell more of Austin's story when they're ready.

For now, we simply want to say THANK YOU. 🧡

Thank you for trusting Michigan Outdoors Report with something carrying this much meaning, and thank you for helping us pass an important message on to the next generation of Michigan hunters.

His story is why we wear orange.

🧡 Hunt safe. Hunt responsible. Come home.

09/01/2026

Hunters participating must wear a cap, hat, vest, jacket or rain gear of hunter orange. The hunter orange garments must be your outermost layer and be visible from all sides. Hunter orange includes camouflage that is not less than 50 percent hunter orange.

🎈Also, baiting is illegal in all of the Lower Peninsula with the exception: During the Liberty and Independence hunts only, hunters with disabilities who meet specific requirements may use bait in areas where baiting is banned.

Good luck and be safe this fall.

For full regulations, always refer to the 2026 hunting digest.

🧡

" This was a special hunt. It was during bow season. My sister and I did a sister only hunt with no men. We travelled to northern Michigan and I got this buck during bow season. We field dressed, dragged, and got him home four hours away. It was a really special hunt for both of us."

Congratulations ladies, good job!
