Memorial Day is, thankfully, one of the holidays that has few political grey areas for me. It has always been a weekend to hold loved ones who have passed close to my heart. In my youth, I’m sure barbecues and parties were my first priority, but as I’ve lost more people, more friends and family, I appreciate this time to reflect on their lives and the ways they have touched mine. Many years ago, when dear friends lost their 18 year old son, Galen Gibson, to a school shooter at Simon’s Rock College, death by gun violence, the murders of school children, and gun violence prevention have been in a prominent role in my life and activism.
Four years ago on this date: Tue, May 24, 2022, at 12:28 PM – 1:50 PM, 19 children and 2 teachers were murdered by a single gun man at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX. Since that time, The PEG Center has honored this event and these victims—not as a way of glorifying the unthinkable, but as a memorial to those lives, and the thousands more lost to gun violence every year in a country that can’t seem to lock up its guns—
Beginning in June, we will be honoring each victim of the Uvalde, TX massacre at the Garden of Remembrance on our Clipper City Rail Trail during the months of their birthdays. There will also be an interactive remembrance program for our community to come together in solidarity for the losses and in resistance to weak and insufficient gun laws. By remembering, we help keep the murdered and their families and communities in our hearts and forever alive in all our memories.
The victims of Uvalde, TX massacre in 2022: forever in our hearts.
