Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)

Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) We're one of the country’s largest community development organizations, helping forge vibrant, resilient communities across America. But LISC stays the course.

In 1979, when the Ford Foundation first conceived of LISC, it envisioned an “intermediary”—a smart and savvy non-profit that would connect hard-to-tap public and private resources with hard-to-reach communities struggling to revive. The premise was as simple then as it is now: government, foundations and for-profit companies have the capital; residents and local institutions understand the need; a

nd LISC bridges the gap by offering the relationships and expertise to help community organizations attract the kinds of resources that allow them do their best work. While the components of our programming continue to change and evolve, for almost 40 years, our role and our mission have remained consistent. We receive our funding from banks, corporations, foundations and government agencies. We, in turn, use that funding to provide financing (loans, grants and equity) and technical and management assistance to local partners and developers. Through our 30 local offices, a rural program that reaches nearly 1,400 counties, and LISC-founded affiliates and entities, we have made investments in housing, businesses, jobs, education, safety and health in all 50 States of the U.S. WE ARE ON THE GROUND
LISC is in more places than any other community development organization. We have staff, expertise and relationships in 30 local offices. We LISTEN
LISC engages local leaders and neighbors to plan, set goals and measure progress. We bring local issues to state and national policy leaders. WE INNOVATE
LISC tests ground-breaking ideas locally and adapts them nationally for places as diverse as the Mississippi Delta and San Francisco Bay. WE LEVERAGE
LISC invests in distressed neighborhoods for maximum impact. Every dollar we invest attracts another $3 in private capital. WE SEE THE BIG PICTURE
LISC’s approach is comprehensive. We work on housing, businesses, jobs, education, health and safety in the same place at the same time. WE PERSEVERE
Markets go up and down, political winds shift, fads come and go. WE HAVE AN IMPACT
Our communities are better places to live, more people have jobs and incomes rise.

📸 LISC joined Dollar Tree in New Orleans to explore our partnership’s impact and meet the community organizations, Ubuntu Village NOLA and Uncommonconstruction, powering this impact.

We visited a high school in the 9th Ward where our community partners created a new outdoor garden and gathering space for local residents to use. The planter boxes anchoring this space were built by young people learning the construction trade through paid, hands-on training.

Thank you, Dollar Tree, for supporting partners and programs that create vibrant, safer communities where young people and their families can thrive.

Hundreds of thousands of affordable homes are at risk of disappearing across rural America.

In a new article in Shelterforce, Mark Kudlowitz, LISC’s Senior Director of Policy, details the need for Congress to pass comprehensive housing legislation that includes the entirety of the Rural Housing Service Reform Act. This bill will help the U.S. Department of Agriculture preserve it’s rural affordable rental housing portfolio, ensuring families can continue to live in decent, safe, and affordable housing. Lending is central to our work at LISC, and we could not do it without funders like TD. The bank’s $60M in loans to LISC has contributed to 3,500 housing units and 750,000 square feet of commercial and community space in neighborhoods nationwide.

One example is Greenwood Townhomes in East Orange, NJ. LISC made a $1.2M construction loan funded by TD to help East Orange CDC build six single-family row homes to rent to families with incomes at or below 60% of Area Median Income.
