Congratulations to Stephen Colbert on an incredible run. Twenty years of sharp, fearless comedy — and one of the most generous people we’ve had in our corner.

What’s bringing JOY to your life right now? Comedian took to the streets to find out what people are excited about, online or off, and the answers took us to some wildly unexpected places. At and , we like to dwell on the positive — those exclamation points of life. Hearing about what people love, we were reminded how easy it is to build connection by laughing about the little things that light us up.

Why is comedy such an effective tool for talking about hard topics? explains, if you can make someone laugh, you can get them to do anything.

and explain how food insecurity is getting worse for kids across America and why it’s important to keep talking about it.

Over 14 million kids face food insecurity in the U.S.

Being food insecure means not having reliable access to enough food. For kids, that amounts to more than hunger, it’s the chronic stress of uncertainty that follows them home and into the classroom. This is happening every day, in every city and every state in the country, and in communities like yours.

Thank you, , for keeping this critical issue in the conversation.

Forty years ago today, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams walked on stage — alongside the biggest names in comedy — and raised $2.5 million to help people experiencing homelessness. Just by being funny.

Eight more HBO specials followed, raising millions and keeping poverty and homelessness in the cultural conversation.

The lineup: George Carlin, Garry Shandling, Gilda Radner, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Bobcat Goldthwait, Dennis Miller, Michael Keaton, Paul Rodriguez, Steven Wright, Howie Mandel, “Weird” Al Yankovic, Laraine Newman, Harry Anderson, Richard Belzer, and Jon Lovitz — plus legends like Sid Caesar, Carl Reiner, Jerry Lewis, Dick Gregory, Steve Allen, and Henny Youngman, among many others.

Years later, Billy Crystal remembered that first night: “As we walked off stage at the Amphitheater after doing this opening, Pat Lee said ‘the phones are ringing,’ and the three of us started to cry. They’re out there. They’re listening. They’re donating. And we raised a significant amount of money… Because what was great about it was that the whole comedy world came out. All these people wanted to perform.”

Today is National Let’s Laugh Day—a great excuse to watch something funny. And also a good reminder of why we do what we do at Comic Relief.

talks about how comedy “disarms” us, and it’s true. You laugh, you drop your guard a little, and suddenly you’re actually listening. That’s where harder conversations can happen–the ones that usually feel too heavy, too awkward, or too easy to scroll past.

This universal connection, the ability to reach a 5-year-old kid *or* an entire crowd of strangers sitting in the dark, is why comedy remains at the forefront of our mission to get more people to care about childhood poverty–and join us in helping to solve it.

One year ago this week, Comic Relief and the New York comedy community came together to produce Stand Up For L.A., a night of comedy to raise money for people affected by the California wildfires. Jon Stewart, John Oliver, Ramy Youssef, Rosie Perez, Desi Lydic, Hannah Berner, and Josh Johnson took the stage for a night of laughs that came together quickly because of everyone’s willingness to pitch in however they could to address the urgent crisis.

A year later, we can look back and see the tangible impact from the generous donations of our supporters, which helped children and communities recover long after the fires themselves faded from the headlines. Here are just some of the ways your support helped:

- Feeding America and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank distributed over 39 million pounds of food, water, and personal care items.

- Boys & Girls Clubs of America aided over 81,000 individuals in fire-affected communities, offering childcare, meals, extended hours, and trauma care for families who lost homes or schools.

- Covenant House sheltered over 100 homeless youth, expanded emergency capacity, and mobilized outreach efforts to distribute essentials to affected neighborhoods.

- The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, and Children’s Health Fund collectively provided therapy sessions and crisis counseling to thousands of adults and children impacted by the wildfires.

- Helen Keller Intl delivered free eye care to 350 individuals who lost access to vision services.

We just wanted to again thank all the people who had a hand in supporting this tremendous night, and to take a moment to show everyone the ways in which the money raised through rapid response events truly does change lives.
