Johnny Mac Tennis Project The Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP) changes young lives by removing the economic and social barriers

The Johnny Mac Tennis Project (JMTP) changes young lives by removing the economic and social barriers to success through tennis. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, JMTP introduces the sport of tennis as a life-long health, fitness and social activity to thousands of under-resourced New York City area kids, particularly those living in East Harlem and the South Bronx, two communities immediately adjacent to th

eir base at SPORTIME Randall’s Island. For a smaller group of dedicated young athletes, JMTP provides a pathway to success through competitive tennis, leading to college scholarships, careers in the industry, and, for a few, professional tennis careers and, perhaps, Grand Slam titles.

Throughout the year, our Excellence Program students had the opportunity to learn from an incredible group of speakers whose journeys extended far beyond the tennis court.

From educators and entrepreneurs to business leaders, former junior players, scholarship recipients, and tennis legends, each guest brought a unique perspective and shared valuable lessons about perseverance, education, leadership, curiosity, and personal growth.

📚 Wanda, JMTP’s academic tutor, spoke about the importance of education and lifelong learning.

🎾 Dylan, the first student to complete the full JMTP pathway, shared his journey from Community Program participant in second grade to earning a college tennis scholarship.

🤖 Scholarship player Isabella Doni and her Mechanics Team demonstrated their nationally competitive robotics project, showing our students that it is possible to pursue passions both on and off the court.

🥣 Margaret Barrow, founder of It’s Nola, discussed the importance of healthy nutrition and even invited students to sample products and provide feedback on future flavors.

🎾 Claude Okin, CEO of SPORTIME, shared his tennis journey and the story behind building one of the nation’s largest tennis organizations.

💼 YPC members Alex Steinroeder and Kristin Norton reflected on their experiences as junior and Division I student-athletes at Harvard, and how those lessons translated into successful careers in the sports and financial industries.

🏆 And of course, John and Patrick McEnroe joined us to discuss their own paths through tennis, the lessons they’ve learned along the way, and the importance of giving back to the next generation.

What made this series so special wasn’t just the speakers, it was our students. Every session sparked thoughtful questions, meaningful conversations, and opportunities for our players to see the many different paths available to them through hard work, education, and passion.
