Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children, a licensed and accredited non-profit organization with more than a hundred years of service, provides support and guidance for children, women, and families throughout all our program areas in adoption and beyond. From birth and adoptive families to adoptees to children awaiting their forever homes and living in adversity, Spence-Chapin is here to provide compassionate and expert care and services to support each individual we serve. Spence-Chapin also offers a wide range of counseling and support services to all individuals, couples, and families, including those who are not connected to adoption.

Since 1995, Spence-Chapin’s Domestic Special Needs Adoption Program has helped children with complex medical and developmental needs find loving, permanent families. We believe preparation is an act of care — and that families deserve clear information, compassionate guidance, and support as they consider what may be possible. Spence-Chapin waives all professional service fees through this program.

At Spence-Chapin, we believe every child deserves a loving, permanent family — and every family deserves clear, ethical guidance along the way.

We’re sharing more about our Ghana adoption program and what families may need to understand as they explore this program.

For some families, this may include kinship or relative adoption—when a family has an existing relationship or connection to a child living abroad. Like all international adoption pathways, this process requires careful preparation, legal guidance, cultural humility, and child-centered decision-making. For families who you have not yet identified a child but hope to adopt from Ghana, our referral pathway might be right for you.

Marcus is a cheerful and curious child living in a foster home in Colombia. He attends a pre-Kindergarten program where he enjoys spending time with his peers and exploring his creative side through painting.

Marcus has developmental delays, particularly with his speech, and receives therapy to support his development. He is making progress with his therapy and care.

We’re excited to share a glimpse into a day full of community, connection, and reunion at Spence-Chapin! Several families who adopted through our South Africa Adoption Program came together from all over the East Coast to spend the day reconnecting with one another. Kids got to play, grownups got to laugh, and we all got to feel the love of this vibrant community.

Thank you to the families who joined us, and we missed those who couldn’t make it! Here’s to seeing each other again very soon… (Join us for our Halloween Bash this weekend!) ❤️

International Kinship Adoption, also known as Relative Adoption, is when someone adopts a child from another country they have existing ties to. It comes with unique legal, ethical, cultural, and emotional considerations.

As Spence-Chapin expands our international programs, including our recently launched Ghana program, education around kinship and relative adoption is increasingly important.

Spence-Chapin’s Lauren Jiang and E. Stefani Moon, along with Jane Krol, recently explored this topic in an article published by the National Council for Adoption.
