Global Kids DC youth leaders spent the second half of their global citizenship journey in Tokyo listening, learning, and building understanding across cultures. 🇯🇵

At Kaetsu Gakuen, a Tokyo high school, our students sat with Japanese educators and peers to learn firsthand what school, leadership, and daily life look like on the other side of the world, then joined their new friends in cultural exchange through music, dance, and performance.

Our students also sat in on an Artist Panel on arts, cultural exchange, and living abroad in the diaspora, hearing directly from artists navigating identity, creativity, and belonging across two worlds. They also visited the U.S. Embassy to learn about diplomacy and international careers, and paused for a quiet moment of reflection at Shinagawa Central Garden, making paper cranes in remembrance of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Through these experiences, our students engaged with history, identity, and responsibility in ways no textbook could teach.

The week closed with a farewell dinner cruise on a traditional Yakatabune and a group reflection where students named what they’ll carry home with them, not souvenirs, but perspective.

This is what intentional global education looks like: young people showing up with open minds, honoring history, and building real connection across borders.

Congratulations to our Executive Director, Dominique Jones for being recognized by City and State NY as a nonprofit leader who goes above and beyond in service to New Yorkers.

Everyday we get to see up close her dedication to young people to remove barriers and create opportunities for our City’s youth.

This recognition is well deserved as she leads GK in its next era.

This week, our Global Kids - DC Youth touched down in Japan and began the next chapter of their global citizenship journey in Kyoto. 🇯🇵✨

From boarding the Shinkansen bullet train straight into the heart of tradition, our students have spent their first days in the field: exploring Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and reflecting on Buddhism, architecture, and cultural preservation. They sat down with Aeru Gojo to learn how Japanese heritage is passed to the next generation, then experienced the mindfulness of a traditional tea ceremony firsthand. 🍵

Our Youth Leaders also visited the Utoro Peace Memorial Museum, engaging with difficult history and the work of peacebuilding, and wandered Nishiki Market to see how food and local life are woven together.

At Global Kids, we believe global citizenship is a skill set, not just a mindset. This journey is designed to help our Youth Leaders investigate the world, recognize new perspectives, and communicate across cultures, the building blocks of global competence. 🌏

Proud of how our students are showing up curious, thoughtful, and open to the world. ✨

GK-DC Week 2 in the books!

This week, our young leaders got to work! Laying the foundation for their Action Projects while diving deep into culture, community, and the issues shaping our world 🌎

🏛️ We explored history and culture with a trip to the Smithsonian

🎤 We were inspired by guest speaker Markus Batchelor, Ward 8 native, history-maker as the youngest-ever elected member of the DC State Board of Education, and current National Political Director at People For the American Way. From City Hall to community outreach, Markus reminded our youth that leadership starts at home 🏡

🛠️ We got hands-on in guided workshops and outings, building the skills and knowledge our youth need to bring their Action Projects to life
This is just the groundwork, the real magic is coming 👀

📌 Stay tuned as we share the incredible projects and activities from Week 3 and Week 4! The youth are just getting started 🔥

Global Kids DC Youth are participating interactive workshops, speaking engagements, and panels to learn about current issues affecting our world.

This summer, Youth Leaders from GKDC had the opportunity to join experts at , where youth learned about US-Japan relations, interesting field research as well had the opportunity to sit and ask questions. We are very honored to have CFR’s support in engaging young people in foreign policy and international careers. Thank you!

Don’t miss out on what’s next as young people prepare for a week of cultural immersion, service learning, sustainability, history, and dialogue.
