What can New York City learn from global cities to create safe, dignified, and stable homes for every New Yorker?

Our latest report, Global Ideas for Housing Every New Yorker, is a collection of case studies of cities around the globe who have taken big swings to address their housing crises. In exchanges with global housing leaders, Fellows studied efforts to
▫️Unleash supply
▫️Plan for neighborhood mix
▫️Adapt homes for climate resilience
▫️Build for demographic shifts
▫️Energize social housing
▫️and embrace housing for all.

These case studies do not provide a simple fix or one silver bullet for New York City. They do offer examples of creative ideas, unlikely allies, and courageous solutions that can inspire us to be bolder in the decisions we make here.

Take a look at what our Local Center Lighting Projects have been up to this Spring! ✨✨

Three local partners — Staten Island Urban Center, GrowHouse Design + Development Group, and Church-Flatbush Community Alliance — are illuminating streets and plazas near small businesses in their neighborhoods, with help from A+A+A, Flint Collective, Queens Lighting Collective, Andrea Steele Architects, SITU, Arup, and Phillips Lytle. Stay tuned for project unveilings this summer!

These lighting installations are made possible with funding from the Public Realm Grant

Last week, we joined the and architect Søren Pihlmann for a conversation about creative approaches to material use and reuse. What can we learn from architecture that considers resource scarcity and climate urgency, such as ’s Thoravej 29, a project which treated the building itself as its own material bank? We heard from the directors of the 2025, Slow Down, about how to challenge fast-paced, consumption-driven architecture and advocate for a regenerative approach.

Thank you to .newyork Eastman for hosting us!

Keep an eye out for more of our Global Exchange public programming this spring.
