It’s All in the Science: Part 11 🔬

What do clinical trial phases actually mean?

From preclinical research through Phases 1–4, each step is designed to answer a different question about a potential treatment - from safety & dosing to effectiveness & long-term impact.

At Solving Kids’ Cancer, we support promising science across this journey, helping move new ideas from the lab toward better treatment options for children facing the most aggressive cancers.

On National Nonprofit Day, we’re reflecting on the mission at the heart of Solving Kids’ Cancer ✨

Every day, we work to identify, fund & advance promising research that can lead to better treatment options for children facing the most aggressive cancers. Our work is guided by science, shaped by families & centered on what children need most.

We’re grateful to every family, researcher, partner & supporter who helps move this mission forward.

A new clue hidden in cancer’s DNA 🧬

A study led by SickKids found that some cancer treatments (especially platinum-based chemotherapy) can leave distinct changes in the DNA of cancer cells that survive treatment.

These changes offer new insight into how childhood cancers can evolve when they return and may help researchers better understand why some tumors become harder to treat.

By learning to recognize these genetic “fingerprints,” scientists may be able to design safer, more precise treatment approaches in the future 🎗

🎗️ August is World Cancer Support Month 🎗️

A cancer diagnosis affects far more than one person… it reaches families, caregivers, friends, clinicians, advocates & entire communities.

This month, we recognize the people who show up with compassion, patience, encouragement & care. Their support can bring comfort during the hardest moments and help families feel less alone.

At Solving Kids’ Cancer, we are grateful for every person who stands beside children and families affected by pediatric cancer & for the community that continues to turn care into action and hope into progress 🤍

This past weekend, SKC’s Lindsay Jackson had the honor of attending the 2026 CNCF Parent & Caregiver Education Conference, joining families, caregivers, survivors, advocates, researchers & medical experts from across the neuroblastoma community.

Throughout the conference, Lindsay heard firsthand from patients and families, learned more about the latest advances in neuroblastoma research & gained valuable insight into current and upcoming clinical trials. These conversations offered an important reminder of the power of listening to lived experiences and keeping children and families at the center of progress.

We’re grateful to the CNCF | Neuroblastoma for creating a space where the community can come together to share knowledge, build connections & strengthen the collective effort to improve treatment options and outcomes for children affected by neuroblastoma 🎗️
