Katharina Gruzei

NOW ON VIEW IN THE BOGLIASCO ONLINE GALLERY

For Bogliasco's 30th anniversary year, we are pleased to present Austrian visual artist Katharina Gruzei, who was in residence during the spring 2025 semester.

Katharina Gruzei is an independent artist working across photography, video, film, sound, and installation. Her practice explores societal tendencies and socio-cultural issues, ranging from gender-related themes to questions shaped by urban environments. A central focus of her work lies in feminist concerns and projects in public space, often realized in site-specific contexts. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and she is the recipient of numerous prizes and scholarships. She lives and works in Vienna and Linz, Austria.

Through site-specific interventions, Katharina Gruzei explores how we experience public space, often revealing its hidden histories. In Transformation, she reanimates the forgotten architecture of a Victorian steam-train station by setting a fabric installation ablaze, while in OPEN, she uses a solar-powered LED sign to draw attention to an inaccessible traffic island cut off by highways. Her work often relinks collective memory and local legends through surreal disruptions of the everyday—from the mythical unicorn that appears at a lake in “As a Matter of Desire” to the submerged light of “Sub Lumina”, which suggests a haunting presence beneath a lake's surface. Finally, through large-scale installations like “Portraits of the Unknown (SPACE LADIES)”, the artist utilizes urban facades to grant visibility to forgotten histories, such as the overlooked legacy of female space pioneers.

Congratulations to Bogliasco alumni Cláudia Tatinge Nascimento (BF ’25) on being the recipient of Dance Camera North International Dance Film Festival's Change Maker Award for her film 88 Flesh Red.

Screening Saturday, June 6 at 3pm as part of the Capri Arts Festival.

Europe’s colonial project engaged racist premises to justify the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and the occupation and economic exploitation of Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Its supremacist ideology found greater validation in the 18th century, when medicine first used of the term “race” to classify human beings and the fine arts set whiteness as the definition of beauty. 88. Flesh Red resists colonial discourse and deconstructs its view of “high art” by signaling how ancestral movement vocabularies manifest in the contemporary artform KRUMP.

Festival director Danielle Ricci Cheng writes, "Your film brought us on a stunning journey through innovative dance and filmmaking. Your work speaks to the people in our society and presents a statement in a meaningful, raw, thought-provoking way. Thank you to you and your beautiful dancer for creating this film."

We’re excited to help share new work from Bogliasco alum Eric Chasalow (BF ’22)

His latest album, “…arching, reaching, breathless” (New Focus Recordings, released April 17, 2026), brings together over 30 years of music for strings, showcasing the full range of his compositional voice, from meditative and spacious to dense and electrifying.

The album includes The Wings That Bear the Night Away, a piece Chasalow composed during his time at the Bogliasco Foundation, performed by acclaimed violinist Mari Kimura.
A powerful reflection of a wide-ranging career, this release spans works for live electronics, fixed media, and traditional chamber ensembles.

Composer Eric Chasalow releases ...arching, reaching, breathless featuring several pieces for strings in chamber and electroacoustic settings. Featuring performances by the Lydian String Quartet along with several leading freelancers, Chasalow's music is rich in timbral invention, cohesive structu...

The Bogliasco community mourns the passing of Michael Harrison, a two-time fellow in 2016 and 2022, who also performed at a special concert honoring our 25th anniversary.
Known for helping redefine the role of Just Intonation in the American canon, appreciation of Harrison’s work was largely concentrated in music circles, where its otherworldly sophistication was most fully recognized.

One of Harrison’s most famous works, Revelation (2005), was described by music critic Tim Page as “the most brilliant and original extended composition for solo piano since the early works of Frederic Rzewski.”

Harrison was the founder of the American Academy of Indian Classical Music in New York City and the Creative Music Intensive program at Arts, Letters & Numbers in Troy, New York.

We extend our deepest condolences to Michael’s wife, Marina, and to all of his family and friends.

It was a magical evening in Paris as we launched Bogliasco’s 30th anniversary, celebrating with alumni and special guests around the stunning premiere of The Alonetimes. The work was co-created by alum Philip Venables and Jennifer Walshe, and commissioned by Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain and Festival Musica Strasbourg.

Enormous thanks to L'École des Arts Joailliers avec le soutien de Van Cleef & Arpels for hosting such an elegant cocktail in their beautiful space, and to Jen and Philip for their engaging artist talk, moderated by Bogliasco Executive Director Laura Harrison. We’re also grateful for the thoughtful oversight of board member Elizabeth Kan Braekman and the presence of beloved alumni from France, Belgium, Germany, the UK, and beyond.

Philip’s work has been recognized by the prestigious Fedora Platform, among others.

The Alonetimes, which explores solitude and the search for love, was developed in part during Philip’s Spring 2025 Bogliasco residency. We could not be more honored to have helped inspire this groundbreaking new musical theater piece as it travels on to Amsterdam, Berlin, Oxford, and beyond.
